On eBay: 1967 Shelby Super Snake
UPDATE: This auction has ended early with a $3,000,000 Buy-It-Now offer from a zero-feedback bidder. We’ll see if this turns out to be a legit offer. I also fixed my typos … sheesh!
Up for sale is a one-off 1967 Shelby GT500 Super Snake, one of three Super Snakes built by Shelby (the other two were Cobras). The asking price is $3,000,000 or best offer, and the auction ends on January 31. The surviving Cobra Super Snake was sold for $5.5 million in early 2007 at Scottsdale, so $3 million seems in the realm of possibility for this GT500, even with softening prices. Nineteen offers have been made on the car. Unfortunately, offer amounts are not revealed. Knowing eBay, I can imagine roughly 17 of those offers were in the 75 dollar range.
The car is equipped with a lightweight 427 producing 520-horsepower. For those with lots of cash and a slight death wish, the 427 will motivate the GT500 Super Snake to approximately 170-mph. Average speed at the Goodyear test track was 142-mph.
Even by Shelby standards the car is rather famous. It has been featured in a number of magazines, books, and TV shows over the years. The seller also states there is, “plenty of real documentation.” The car’s website — www.SuperSnake.org — also comes with the auction. At the site you can get to know more about the car and watch the video from Goodyear’s test track.
