Chicago Auto Show - Part II

Interest is building for these earlier Japanese sports cars. This rather sharp looking bronze Mitsubishi Galant GTO should look familiar. The designer, Hiroaki Kamisago, was a student of the Art Center College of Design in California, and borrowed heavily from American muscle cars of the era. This car is notable because it was the first Japanese car to feature true hard-top styling. Its 180-horsepower engine, 5-speed transmission and light weight made it quicker than one would expect.mitsubishi-galant-gto-r73x.JPG

This 1969 Mercedes-Benz 300SEL 6.3 was on display in the Mercedes-Benz area via the Mercedes-Benz Classic Center USA. The 300SEL sedan featured both luxury and power. The car is equipped with a 250-horsepower 386 V8 that produces 369 ft/lbs of torque at 2,800 RPM. Top speed was 137-mph and the car was equipped with air suspension, halogen headlights, air conditioning, leather upholstery, power steering, power windows and on top of it all managed 16-mpg. It was lauded as “the greatest sedan in the world” by Road & Track Magazine. 1969-mercedes-benz-300sel.JPG
