$200,000 Hood Ornament

200k-hood-ornament.jpgThere is a trend out there that involves slapping a hoard of diamonds on something and then parading it around. It’s very popular in the food world, where the chef can then claim to have the ‘world’s most expensive’ of whatever he is selling by sticking a diamond next to it on the plate. Does a diamond sitting on top of a pile of bullcrap make it the world’s most expensive pile of bull? Probably not, but I bet somebody would buy it.

In the automotive world, we’ve had diamond-covered wheels, shifting knobs, a gold-plated Porsche, and a Maybach 57S with diamonds and gold instead of chrome interior fixings — and those examples are from just one blog.

Most recently, we have this diamond-paved Spirit of Ecstasy that was commissioned by Manhattan Motorcars for display at the New York International Auto Show back in March. There have been many other diamond-studded pieces and parts in the past, so I’m not clear on why the creator of the hood ornament states combining diamonds with automobiles has never been done before. I’m sure the reasoning falls into the same category as the “first” Mustang. The value of a bejeweled hood ornament? Roughly $200,000. You can read more about how it was created at The Epoch Times.

So, if Ferrari binoculars just isn’t going to cut it when you have scads of cash cluttering up the house, you can go out and commission yourself a hood ornament that could feed a family for a decade or two (PDF file). Or maybe you can get a Bugatti toaster and then slather diamonds all over it and have the best of both worlds!
