About Camper
The Volkswagen Camper was first introduced in 1950 and saw production run right through until 2003. The camper remains iconic, conjuring images of days at the beach and being able to take your stylish hotel with you wherever you went.
Today you can rent a Volkswagen Camper so you can tour the UK on holiday, taking in the sights as well as enjoying a spectacular camper van. If you have the money you could also invest in one of your own, making it a perfect DIY project for any budding mechanic.
The Westphalia Campers were in fact modifications of the Volkswagen Type 2, with 1,000 conversions being made from 1951 until 1958.
The popularity of the Volkswagen Camper was in part due to its looks, with the two tone colours and large chrome Volkswagen badge on the front. The camper itself was designed not only for its practicality but for its standout looks.
As with any camper it is about the equipment it packs, with an array of gadgets and comforts available to owners to help make their lives easier. Folding seats were offered as standard to provide a variety of sleeping arrangements for passengers. A number of storage solutions were also offered so you could make the camper feel like home and store all your belongings safely as you travelled the country.
The camper was also about interior styling, offering interior wood panels which were popular in many homes at the time. Curtains were also offered as standard to ensure you maintained your privacy at all times, but allowing you to individualise your camper.
One of the most important items for any holiday was the introduction of the ice box, ensuring you always had a cold drink waiting for you on long journeys or after a day in the sunshine. Many models also had sinks so you had the convenience of having full kitchen facilities, with the optional extra of a camping stove.
Other standard items included a folding table so you had somewhere to eat and more importantly a water storage device, so you were never left without a drink.
A number of optional extras were available with the camper to improve the journey for passengers, namely a chemical toilet, camping equipment and even air conditioning. As the years progressed the add-ons became more sophisticated with a range of awnings, for that true camping experience. The awnings also gave passengers more room when out and about.
