About Vitesse
The Triumph Vitesse was a menacing looking two door six cylinder car, available in a saloon and convertible. Designed by Giovanni Michelotti the car was available with 1.6 litre and 2 litre engines. In total there were 51,212 models built from 1962 until 1971.
The Vitesse name had been used prior to this model and again afterwards. The name was previously used by Austin in 1914 and by another Triumph in 1936. Later, the name was used by Land Rover in 1982 and again by Rover in 1988.
In 1962 a convertible version of the car was exported to the United States as a limited edition. This was modified for US roads with left hand drive as standard, however only 679 were actually sold. Due to the failure in the US market the car was eventually withdrawn.
The 2 litre engine was only released in 1966 with 95 bhp and also featured in the GT6 Coupe. With a 0-62 of 11 seconds it provided a much needed boost to the car and gave it an edge over the competition. The one limitation from the increase in the power was the noticeable issue with the rear suspension which was adversely affected as a result.
The final Triumph Vitesse to be released was the Vitesse Mark Two in 1968. One area of criticism on previous models was the rear suspension, which, along with other aspects of the car were redesigned for the final release. These modifications were designed to improve ride stability and handling to give a better all round driving experience.
The Mark Two also received an engine upgrade, with performance improved to 104 bhp and a 0-62 of 11 seconds. By changing the valve timing of the car they managed to make the car that little bit quicker, improving efficiency and increased its top speed to over 100 mph. A number of modifications were also made to the exterior of the car including a new front grille, with the interior being modernised.
In total, there were 5,649 Mark Two saloons produced and 3,472 convertibles during its three year reign from 1968 until 1971.
