About TR6

Top

The Triumph TR6 was the best selling TR model and a true British sports car. The car was produced from 1969 until 1976 and featured a six cylinder 2.5 litre engine. A total of 94,619 cars were produced during its life, though only 8,000 of these were actually sold in the UK. The majority of cars were exported.

The convertible TR6 stood out amongst the competition with its iconic British styling and on the road it packed a great deal of power for such a small car.

The TR6 followed on from the TR5, though the design was very square, as seen with the majority of cars from the 1970's. The entire TR range were designed very closely together, it was the TR6 however which saw the use of a different front and rear to the car.

The inline six cylinder engines featured fuel injection. For those cars which were exported to the United States the engines were carburetted. The fuel injection gave the engine an impressive 150 bhp with a 0-62 of just 8.2 seconds. Top speed for the car was set at 120 mph which was extremely fast for a convertible.

Later in the life of the TR6 the non US versions were detuned to 125 bhp in order to enhance the driving experience, improving the handling for the driver.

The Triumph TR6 came with a four speed manual transmission as standard. Owners could optionally purchase an overdrive system, which was perfect for the more aggressive driver who wanted close gear ratios. The car used independent rear suspension with rack and pinion steering which added to the overall handling of the car.

The interior of the car was also impressive with carpets as standard and even bucket seats to add to the sporty feel of the car. The dashboard replicated many of the era by being designed in plywood with a veneer finish. The hardtop of the car was also optional, perfect for those owners who loved the open road at any time of the year.

The Triumph was quite a niche car in the UK, though as of 2011 2,723 cars remained in the UK. With a number of owners clubs available throughout the UK for the Triumph TR6, it shows that the car has a popular, albeit small following.
