About GT6

Top

The Triumph GT6 was based on the Triumph Spitfire convertible, with production beginning in 1966 and continuing until 1973. The sports coupe showed off its beautiful curves, with a front end not too dissimilar to that of modern Porsche's.

Giovanni Michelotti first commissioned the GT6 back in 1963 and after a number of unsuccessful prototypes the first GT6 rolled off the production line in 1966. All GT6's were assembled in Coventry in the West Midlands.

All models featured the same 1996cc inline 6 engine. The mark one ran from 1966 until 1968 of which there were 15,818 built. This was also the most popular of the models. The mark two saw 12,066 created between 1968 and 1970, whilst the mark three had 13,042 built between 1970 and 1973.

The slick design of the Triumph GT6 had 2 seats, though a small third seat could be ordered for children. The design was altered slightly from the Spitfire in that a larger bonnet was required to house the 6 cylinder engine. The boot was also designed as a hatch, as seen in the Jaguar E Type.

The engine developed 95 bhp at 5,000 rpm to ensure the GT6 packed some power. Up rated springs were introduced to the car to cope with the additional weight of the engine. The car went from 0 to 62 in just 12 seconds, with a top speed of 106 mph.

The interior of the GT6 was also a big selling point, with wooden dashboard and the likes of carpets and a heater included as standard, which was rare for cars at the time.

The 1969 mark two model addressed concerns over the rear suspension found in the mark one model. This was done in an attempt to boost its reputation in the States. Amendments were also made to aesthetics of the car including a new front bumper and side vents. The engine was also reengineered to deliver 107 mph with an improved 104 bhp.

The mark three saw a major face lift to the design so that it more closely mirrored that of the Spitfire. The car delivered a cleaner design and smoother curves. Whilst the engine was not altered the design of the car allowed for a greater top speed of 112 mph and 0-62 of just 10.1 seconds.
