In 1931 the company was called Dr. Ing. h. c. F. Porsche GmbH. Initially, the company did not manufacture automobiles under its name. Even though the Porsche Company did not make cars under its own name yet, the company was manufacturing cars to compete in motor races. In 1933, Porsche developed a Grand Prix racecar. In 1948, the company produced its first sports car bearing the Porsche name. The car was named Porsche No. 1 and won in the car race at the Innsbruck Stadtrennen. He did not want to use a 3-digit number with a zero in the middle to represent the car. So, Porsche replaced the "0" with a "1" and hence the name, 911 was born.
