About 997

Top

The Porsche 997 began production in 2004 until 2012 and is the modern day Porsche as we know it. The beautifully curved 997 was available in two door coupe and two door convertible versions, in either a 3.6 or 3.8 litre engine.

The modern day 911 or Carrera, as it was also known, was one of the most successful 911's to be produced, with over 100,000 cars sold in its first two years on sale. The 997 was a step up on its predecessor, with a more modern styling and a better driving experience, keeping the driver glued to the road.

The car also featured a more powerful engine than previous 911 models and with better handling, would allow the car to get off the line faster. A variety of transmissions were also made available with the five speed automatic, six speed manual and seven speed PDK. The PDK transmission was designed to improve the overall performance of the car through the use of a double clutch and quicker up and down changes, accompanied by a modified four wheel drive system and torque vectoring system.

The standard 997 saw the 3.6 litre engine used from the Boxer, a flat six engine delivering a 0-62 speed of 4.8 seconds. The Carrera S utilised the larger 3.8 litre engine, with a 0-62 time of 4.7 seconds and a top speed of 190 mph. The Turbo version of the Porsche 997 however, saw a 0-62 mph time of just 3.4 seconds when used with a double clutch automatic. The manual version added an extra 0.1 second to the acceleration time.

Most cabriolet versions of the standard coupe are slower, mainly due to the increased weight of the car in making the chassis more rigid. The 997 was different in that whilst the weight of the car was increased, the performance was actually maintained. This was a major selling point for customers in being able to drive with the top down without falling short on performance.

In 2007 the Porsche 997 GT2 was introduced, making it the fastest 911 to date. It was a twin turbo 3.8 litre engine which gave it a top speed of 204 mph. It also saw acceleration from 0-62 mph at just 3.6 seconds and 0-100 mph of 7.4 seconds. Porsche also claimed that fuel consumption was improved by 15% to the Turbo when at full throttle, giving power, performance and economy in just one car.
