About 924

Top

The Porsche 924 was a two door coupe and successor to the 914, with production beginning in 1976. The 924 had a production life lasting until 1988 when it was superseded by the 944, with the 924 being the entry model for Porsche. The car with the option of a 2 litre or 2.5 litre engine.

The 924 was unique in being rear wheeled drive with a front mounted engine. All previous Porsche typically used rear or mid engine configuration, which set it apart from other cars on the market. The 924 was also the first car with an automatic transmission option, with all previous models housing a manual transmission as standard.

The first year of production saw over 150,000 produced, which was a resounding success. Prior to the success of the 924, Porsche had been in financial difficulty, therefore the additional revenue stream allowed the business to reinvest in future projects, which would ultimately be enhancements to the 911.

In 1978 a turbo version of the 924 was introduced, having seen the need for something with additional power and performance for its customers. The turbo version was born out of the success of various race models, all of which benefitted from having turbo charged engines.

A turbo charged 2 litre engine was used, delivering an impressive 170 bhp, though as the engine itself weighed 29kg more than the standard additional modifications were required to cater for this. Revised suspension was added to counter the additional weight, as well as an anti roll bar for driver safety.

The 924 Turbo also saw modifications to the exterior, ensuring it could be differentiated from the standard 924. The overall design ensured it appeared sportier, with larger wheels and air intakes on the bonnet. Four wheel disc brakes were also added to improve braking, which would be perfect for braking late into corners. The improvements on the 924 Turbo saw it sit closely to the 911 SC in terms of performance.

A racing designed version of the 924 was later produced with a staggering 375 bhp, in the 924 Carrera GTR. In 1980 Porsche entered three GTR's into Le Man's, with the highest place finish being sixth.

The BRSCC and Porsche Racing Drivers Association run a devoted Porsche 924 racing series, which first started in 1992. This allowed lovers of the 924 to see them on the track, where Porsche has made a name for handling and performance, allowing drivers to push their cars further.
