The first generation of the 911 is the basis for everything we know today of the modern Porsche. When the 911 was first introduced it had a massive complex and powerful engine for its day but it also carried a price tag far in excess of its 356 predecessors. Many people were reluctant to buy the 911 because of this large price difference which is what opened the door for the 912.

What people eventually saw was Porsche started winning many professional racing events with their new 6 cylinder 911 and it was very powerful and reliable. By 1969 the 911 had finally caught on and buyers saw the value in the large 6 cylinder, it was only at this time did the 911 become the dominant seller, which is in part why short wheel base early 911s are a rarity.
