Classic American Muscle Car

I love black cars. I love 1965 GTO's. I have always wanted a black '65 GTO Convertible. Seems simple, doesn't it? Well, sometimes it isn't that easy. The hardest color to find a '65 GTO in is black. . and then try to find a great original one or even one worthy of restoration. . the bottom line is even though I knew I wanted a 3X Black '65 GTO convertible, the fact of the matter was for years I just couldn't find one. So in 2004 when I was visiting my good friend and Pontiac restoration guru Scott Tiemann to check on my '69 Judge being restored, the conversation turned to my looking for a black '65, and whether Scott knew of any. Turns out old Scotty was holding out on me - he owned one! Scott had tucked away a 3X black '65 4 speed convert and was waiting for the time to restore a car for himself. Problem is, when you are as talented as Scott is and have a multi-year backlog of work, sometimes that just doesn't happen. So after some arm twisting, Scott sold me his car with the understanding that he would restore it if I didn't rush him! 3+ years later, here is the result.

I wanted my "Ultimate GTO". During the restoration of this Tri-Powered beauty I made some decisions based on my personal preferences. Some decisions were in fact made by Scott because I told him to build it like it was his - and make it PERFECT. Since the original block was long gone, we found a perfectly date-coded 421 block and went all out to build a "Royal Bobcat Cheater" style GTO, just like the magazines were given to test in 1965 ;) Scott turned up the wick even more on this engine, I won't talk out of school but let's just say it runs like no other Tri Power GTO you've ever driven. M21 close ratio gears were put in the original M20 case. . feeding power to the original 3.90 Saf-T-Track rear. 67-style Ram Air cast iron exhaust manifolds were fitted, and a custom mandrel bent exhaust crafted by Scott and crew exits in the stock location but makes large HP possible. G70 tires were fitted in place of 7.75-14's in a futile attempt to get some of the power to the ground. It kinda works, if you lift off the throttle in 4th gear for a second she will hook up and stay that way for a while. .

The original quick ratio manual steering and manual drum brakes were retained, although the later has a "Dyno Brake" kit fitted with carbon metallic shoes, special wheel cylinders and hardware to make them perform well enough to whoa this thing down - and it actually does stop incredibly well.

On the inside, since this is a fair-weather toy, Scott fitted an original heater delete setup - and since all the music comes out the duals I also requested an original radio delete plate be installed. Otherwise she is all as delivered, Rallye Gauges, bucket seats, no console - oh, but I did put on the optional Custom Sport wood steering wheel.

Outside it is the most perfect GTO you can imagine as well, typical of Scott's incredible work. Laser striaght black paint with the correct red pinstripe. . with black standard wheels and "poverty caps". It is one of those sinister cars that just stops you dead in your tracks.

So, here you have it, the GTO I've always wanted to have. Black, 4 speed, Tri Power, the top goes down and it is fast enough to scare even the most brave soul that takes a shot at taming it. The best part? It is concours perfect top to bottom and one of the most unassuming "sleepers" you'll ever see!
