1968 Pontiac Firebird 400, Red, for sale in Plymouth, New Hampshire, for $25,000.
1968 Firebird 400 Convertible. 88,000 original miles. Original numbers matching YT code 400 Pontiac motor. Original TH400 3 speed automatic transmission with shift kit. Original Rochester Quadrajet carburetor. Painted original factory Solar Red.
This car had a frame-off rotisserie body restoration at 75k miles in 2003. The 400 motor was rebuilt with a mild cam upgrade at that time. All exterior sheet metal, chrome and badging were replaced using NOS parts or GM approved replacements wherever possible. All wiring, brake lines and fuel lines were replaced. The front brakes were upgraded from drums to disks. A B & M shift kit was added to the transmission. Headers were added with a Flowmaster dual exhaust system. Rear leaf springs were replaced and rear coil over shocks were installed. The radiator was upgraded to a high performance Be Cool Aluminator series radiator. The original rally wheels were repainted, including the spare. It even has all four rare ‘cocktail shakers’.
The car has been garaged since it was restored, and is only driven on sunny days.
The tires are brand new BF Goodrich TA Radials. I put 60s on the rear and 70s on the front.
This car looks great and is mechanically solid. I would confidently drive it anywhere.
The bad:
The upholstery is original and shows its age. The driver’s seat is torn.
Although the roof has no holes, it was last replaced in 1981 and is not water tight. I rarely need it, so I never bothered to replace it. The roof frame was damaged and repaired before I owned it. The power top opens and closes properly, but the repair is noticeable.
The paint is 10 years old and has nicks and scratches. It still looks great, but a close inspection will show the flaws. Some unpainted metal has surface rust (alternator, headers, leaf springs, etc) but there is no rot or body rust, even on the underside of the car.
The transmission has a small leak where the kick-down control goes in. It has leaked as long as I have owned it. I add about ½ a pint of tranny fluid every other year. The tranny has been serviced regularly, but I have never rebuilt it.
Overall, this is a fun, fast, mostly original, rare muscle car. It is great as is, or for a few dollars and some elbow grease, it could be a real show car.
Exact production numbers for 1968 Firebird 400 convertibles are not known. There were 107,112 Firebirds made in 1968. Of those, 16,960 were convertibles and 18,714 had the 400 motor. That means there were about 3000 400 convertibles made in 1968. Most of those are long gone or have had their engines replaced. I have many parts for this car including the original valve covers, exhaust manifolds and front drum brakes. The original AM radio is installed in the dash, but is not hooked up. I do not know if it actually would work if it were hooked up.
Asking price is $25,000.00. If you have any questions or would like to see the car, call or email Sheridan.
