Intended as the luxurious yin to the inexpensive Roadrunner's yang, the Plymouth GTX was every bit the muscle car that it appeared to be. This '69 packs a numbers-matching 440 and a long list of options that make it an A-list ride for any Mopar fan.

Refinished in the original Y2 Sunfire Yellow, making it a relatively rare beast, this gorgeous GTX's restoration was completed in late 2006. It's so shockingly clean underneath, that it's hard to believe that it's all original sheetmetal, but the fact that EVERYTHING is clean and rust-free makes it likely that it's 100% OEM. Those massive quarters are straight and wave-free, the gaps are awfully good, and fresh satin black rockers and stripes give the big, yellow machine a nasty disposition. This is also an original N96 Air Grabber car, adding to its uniqueness. A fresh black vinyl roof was installed, matching the original texture, and hiding no surprises underneath.

The black bucket seat interior was freshened, but not restored, giving you an idea of how clean this car really was. There were a few split seams that were stitched up, and things like the carpet and floor mats were replaced, but otherwise that's a mostly original driver's compartment. Plymouth didn't give GTX buyers a lot of instruments to look at, but they included a temperature gauge and amp meter as standard equipment. During the restoration, a column-mounted tach and three auxiliary gauges were added, just so you can keep a little closer eye on what's going on under the hood. This one also carries the original (and rare) R22 AM/8-track radio, adding to the GTX's level of sophistication. In the trunk there's a new mat and a full-sized spare tire with jack assembly.

This car's biggest claim to fame is the 375 horsepower 440 under the hood. With matching numbers, it was fully rebuilt to stock specs and with only 300 miles since then, has barely been broken in. The engine bay is nicely detailed with Hemi Orange paint, a correct Air Grabber assembly, and a set of beautifully finished exhaust manifolds. Other important details are the reproduction hoses and clamps, a new ballast resistor on the firewall, and a reproduction red cap battery. The 727 Torqueflite 3-speed automatic has also been rebuilt and carries a shift improvement kit. In addition, it now spins a bulletproof Dana 60 rear end, which was installed by the first owner. The car was originally equipped with an 8.75-inch rear, but according to the original owner's grandson, he had it upgraded since he frequently used the GTX to haul a boat and travel trailer. New shocks, a reproduction exhaust system, and a new gas tank round out the list of recently installed components. Four color-matched steel wheels wear correct hubcaps and a set of reproduction F70-14 redline tires.
