About Cutlass
The Oldsmobile Cutlass was not originally its own brand. The Cutlass was introduced by Oldsmobile in 1961 as a trim level in the F-85 line but would grow to encompass different models as its own brand over time.
The first Cutlass was an experimental car made in 1956. The sports coupe had a stock V8 engine, a 110-inch wheelbase and a fastback roofline. In 1961, the F-85 was introduced with two trim options, basic or deluxe, but the sales were slow. Sales would begin to pick up once the Cutlass trim option was offered in May of the same year.
The Oldsmobile Cutlass option for the F-85 included a console, bucket seats and a four-barrel V8 engine, along with a unique trim. In 1962, the F-85 introduced a convertible version, with the Cutlass option offered as well. The Cutlass option sales would surpass the deluxe option sales of the F-85.
Changes would be made to the F-85 over the next few years, with the Cutlass option undergoing minor revisions to keep up with the evolution of the F-85. As with other cars with similar body styles, the F-85 would see major body changes in 1968.
Wheelbases for the Cutlass would increase to 112 inches for two-door models and 116 inches for four-door models. Buyers could choose a mid-level Cutlass S option or a Cutlass Supreme option for the F-85. The V8 engine option was also expanded to 350 cubic inches. The models in the following year would see minor changes only, such as the introduction of a split grill.
In 1970, the Cutlass was offered in seven different styles for the body including the F-85 sedan and Oldsmobile 442 styles. Minor changes would be made until 1973 when the Cutlass was redesigned to reflect General Motors' Colonnade body platform. The Cutlass would continue to evolve between 1973 and 1977.
During 1978, the Cutlass was redesigned, gaining a smaller body and wheelbase of 108 inches. In 1982, the Cutlass became its own sub-line, with different models using the name at the same time. The Cutlass Ciera and Cutlass Supreme were both introduced in 1982, with the Cutlass Calais following in 1985.
From 1997 to 1999, the name, "Oldsmobile Cutlass" was used for an upscale version of the Malibu. This would be the last car made under the Cutlass name, with production ending in 1999.
