The BMW 7 Series may only have received a facelift recently but leaked images, acquired by AutoCar, have showcased what is reported to be the next generation of the German manufacturer's full sized luxury sedan of choice.

Reports suggest that it will be sold from 2015 and will go head to head with the new S-Class from Mercedes, using plenty of carbon fibre and alloy elements to make it lighter than ever.

The BMW 7 Series range dates back to its 1977 launch and, since then, it has represented the pinnacle of technology and design for this manufacturer, indicating what fans can expect to find on its less prestigious models, a few years down the line.

The first generation E23 was an impressive car in its heyday, since it managed to incorporate climate control and fault alert systems, as well as having airbags and ABS as optional extras.

You can buy classic examples of early 7 Series iterations today, many of which are relatively affordable, given their original price points. In addition, the quality of the engineering holds up well, although you should watch out for electrical and mechanical issues which can accrue with age.
