Motoring enthusiast, Terry Hall and his friend, Butch Healey, set off on quite an intriguing journey this year, as each celebrated their 66th birthday by driving down the famous Route 66 in classic cars built in 1966.

Mr Hall told Nola.com that he and Mr Healey had been big fans of vehicles throughout their lives, with a particular interest in souped-up hotrods during their youth.

The idea to carry out the tour along Route 66 came about when they were reliving their glory days and the conversation turned to how best they could celebrate their passion for classic cars and the open road.

Mr Hall got behind the wheel of a 1966 Shelby GT350 Mustang (pictured) for the trip and he had to source the vehicle from California. Meanwhile, Mr Healey jumped into a 1966 Corvette convertible with a bright yellow paint job, which came all the way from its previous owner in Chicago.

The pair began work on the vehicles in New Orleans, adding GPS and satellite radios to the interior to find their way and stay in touch, but leaving the exterior bodywork as it was originally intended. They then covered the 2,248 mile stretch of Route 66 at their own pace, making the most out of their 66 years on earth.
