The Porsche 928 may not be the best loved model created by this venerable German sports car manufacturer, but it has definitely graduated to the status of a classic over the last couple of decades.

It first arrived in 1978 and was intended to broaden the appeal of Porsche beyond its somewhat more specialised 911 range.

The use of a V8 engine mounted in the front also made the Porsche 928 a bit of a departure for the firm.

However, an interview with Porsche head, Matthias Mueller, conducted by Autonews Europe, has revealed that a modern equivalent to the 928 is in the process of being developed.

It will be based on the Panamera sedan, but will feature a traditional coupe setup and that all-important front mounted engine block.

Mr Mueller said that talks about the 928 successor were also still ongoing and it was all but confirmed to be put into production at some point in the near future.

Those who want to experience a Porsche grand tourer with a front mounted engine at an affordable price can pick up a classic 928 today, in anticipation of the cutting edge follow up that is taking shape in Europe.
