Ford Torino prototype selling

An eBay listing of a highly rare Ford Torino King Cobra prototype has generated a lot of attention this month.
The lot is particularly interesting because it was a NASCAR model that Ford built to compete with the likes of the Plymouth Superbird and Dodge Charger Daytona, but never ended up putting into production.
As such only three of these rare Torinos were ever built, which is why the base asking price for the model being sold is $500,000.
Under the hood is a Boss 429 V8 engine and it also has a four speed manual gearbox, which is apparently a unique feature of this car according to Auto Evolution.
Part of the reason that the Ford Torino King Cobra was developed in the first place was that NASCAR rules in the 1970s were changed so that a minimum of 3000 road-going models had to be built and sold for a vehicle to be eligible to race.
Even if this Torino did not ever make it onto the track in competition, it is still an intriguing part of American automotive history and could well sell for much more than the basic asking price when its online auction concludes.
