British motoring brand, Rover, has never been a big player in the US market and has even faded into obscurity on its home turf, but a couple of models have been praised as underappreciated classics by Zac Estrada writing for Jalopnik.

The first car mentioned is the Rover P6, which was introduced in 1963 and a year later became the first vehicle to win Car of the Year in the European awards.

Estrada argues that it is the follow up to the Rover P6, which also happens to be the last model that was sold as new to American buyers, which deserves more attention in the US.

The Rover SD1 arrived in the mid 1970s and was essentially designed to offer buyers a cheaper alternative to the executive sedans from Jaguar.

It remained in production for 10 years and the flagship iteration featured a V8 engine, which Rover had actually purchased from Buick.

The SD1 received high praise from the British press and, in spite of issues with reliability, remains a much loved classic in certain circles.

The US version, which landed in 1980, was a little bit less impressive due to its measly 133bhp and redesigned front end. Poor sales meant the SD1 soon slipped off the radar, but its classic status is unquestionable.
