The Toyota Celica is one of the classic Japanese coupes and almost every iteration released has gone on to be regarded as a classic of its era.

However, there are some who are a little less respectful of this particular range, according to Patrick George, writing a recent article for Jalopnik.

George points out that a 1970 Toyota Celica, which by most estimations is a classic in its own right, was recently sold for $10,000, but only after it had been converted to look like a 1967 Ford Mustang GT.

This type of aftermarket conversion is not uncommon, because clearly there is a demand for replicas of classics which would otherwise be out of the price range for average buyers.

However, if you have to irreparably alter an existing classic in the process, this does seem like a bit of a waste.

The finished article does its best to look a little like the iconic Eleanor model of the Mustang family, but purists will prefer the unforgettable look of the first generation Celica, which is well regarded in certain circles.

In this instance it might be that the high profile nature of American muscle cars is actually having a detrimental effect on other vintage vehicles.
