Classic cars will be on display in San Francisco at the Academy of Art University, where members of the public will be able to enter and view over 170 vintage vehicles.

While the show looks back on the rich history of the global auto industry, with various examples from famous manufacturers, organisers say that it is really built in order to encourage younger generations to consider the artistic and aesthetic side of vehicle design, and hopefully get them hooked.

Although the museum is available for public viewings you will need to arrange your visit in advance online, and pick from one of two weekly windows during which you can see the collection, as this is a working academic institution.

Proprietor Melissa Stevens, explained that while technological advances had made these classic cars obsolete, their designs remained relevant and artistically sound many decades after their initial inception.

Industrial design director, Tom Matano, said that cars need to create an emotional response in order to become classics. Mr Matano is particularly well placed to make such a comment since he created the design for the Miata, also known as the Mazda MX-5, a vehicle which many already consider a classic.
