The Audi Quattro range began life as a distinct model, designed for off-road rallying, although the marque soon became associated with the four wheel drive system that defined it and is now applied to a number of different models produced by the German manufacturer.

However, a 1992 Audi S4 Quattro, which originally had a 2.2 litre engine and 227 horsepower at its disposal, has been heavily modified to become one of the world's fastest cars.

Owner, Jeff Garner, has been working on his Audi extensively over the years and TopSpeed reports that he has been taking it out for speed runs at the Bonneville Salt Flats, to see just how fast it can go.

With 1100 horsepower under the hood, it is dramatically quick, allowing Mr Garner to top 242mph when going flat out in 2011.

But this year, he managed to one step further, pushing it up to 260mph, which is quicker even than the high tech Bugatti Veyron.

Some reports suggest that no other four door vehicle has ever travelled as quickly on land, which would make it a world record breaking car - all the more impressive, given that it was originally built 20 years ago.
