A British automotive magazine has chosen the Porsche 911 as the greatest car range every built, with a number of other classic vehicles populating its top 50 list.

Car magazine celebrated its five decades in print by compiling the list and any gear head will be interested to see where their favourite autos rank.

American manufacturers were relatively underrepresented in the list, which is of course influenced by the tastes of its European collators. However, the Chevrolet Corvette managed to land at the number 23 spot, while the Ford Mustang was a little above it, positioned at number 34, ahead of the Bugatti Veyron.

The top 10 included the McLaren F1 supercar in third place, with the Range Rover taking fifth and the Mini taking sixth. Interestingly, the Jaguar E-Type, which is often cited as being one of the most beautiful cars ever made, only managed to come in seventh place.

A good mix of highly desirable sports cars and everyday vehicles that have achieved iconic status over the years was contained within the rankings. The Ford Focus' position at number 16 in the list is a particularly pertinent recognition of this, according to the Daily Mail.
