Classic cars are often intended to be looked at rather than driven, but the Mesquite Motor Mania event held this month, not far from Las Vegas, was aimed at those who like to take a more hands-on approach to things.

This year, which is the fourth time this now annual show has been held, saw $15,000 in prize money up for grabs, as well as a wealth of other awards available to the more than 700 classic cars and their owners, who made their way to the event.

Chris Slater, a native of Las Vegas, took home first prize in a burnout competition behind the wheel of his 1970 Chevrolet El Camino and he was not the only one putting a vintage vehicle through its paces.

Mark Wier, the mayor of Mesquite, said that he remembers how, two decades ago, attempts at getting a motor show together in the town were hampered by poor attendance, but that now the Motor Mania event has grown into quite a behemoth, with hundreds of entrants and thousands of spectators turning out year after year in order to view the classic cars.
