This week a buyer paid a cool $3.6 million at an auction for a Ferrari 250 GT LWB 'Tour de France' Berlinetta, making it one of the most expensive classic cars ever sold.

It made more than any other vehicle sold on the night, outdoing Lamborghinis and Aston Martins at an event hosted by RM Auctions in London, England.

Market analysts, Dave Selby, told Bloomberg that the auctioneers were actually struggling to illicit bids for these valuable classic cars and he said that there was some scepticism as to whether recent high flyers like Aston Martin would be able to compete with brands like Ferrari in the future.

To make this point clear, one of the lots which did not sell on the night was an Aston Martin DB4 GT from 1961, a rarity and one of only 75 ever made. It was expected to make over a million dollars but failed to find a buyer.

A Ferrari 750 Monza Spyder was also auctioned but not sold, implying that no motoring brand is immune to market fluctuations and a general hesitancy amongst the wealthy to part with their cash for unstable purchases such as these.
