MG TD, for sale in Stratford, Connecticut, for $11,500.
Sort of a barn find. . . last owner purchased the car in 1980, drove it from Atlanta to his home in Mississippi, stored ever since (in a local service shop. . NOT a barn) other than occasional use in local parades.
Must have always been garaged 'cause the sheet metal is essentially perfect with not a spot of rust perforation, what seems to be perfect wood (wherever I can see), and even almost acceptable ORIGINAL paint. Orignal interior is worn out, mustly due to split seams, wood dash could use refinishing or covering in green vinyl, BUT it runs great (70 psi oil pressure, no smoke 140-155 psi compression), trans feels like new, new engine and transmissions mounts, new handbrake cables, and the original chrome (once I rid it of surfact corrossion) is almost like new. Original King of the Road head and side lights, all new exhaust, original gauges, sure. . needs some work but what an incredible starting point.
We are gonna work on this project bit by bit, have already replaced all of the wheel cylinders, rebuilt the master cylinder, brakes and handbrake now work fine, shocks feel good, front end is nice and 'tight, ' installed new tie rod ends and rack boots, gauiges all work, AND if you want a rust and bondo free MG TD in any color (interior and exterior), this is an excellent candidate. With absoluitely no need for rust or body or wood repair.
Car has top frame (and worthless original top), side curtains, really isn't missing anything. And, of course, EVERYTHING is readily available from Moss Motors or a variety of other sources.
To finish? Primarily needs interior and paint. A new wiring harness would do wonders for reliability but beyond those things, this is one genuinely nice, rust free MG TD.
I have always seen private sellers and dealers tout their cars as 'easy restoration' and in most every case, in my opinion, the car was absolute junk. Bondo bubbling at the bottoms of doors, rotted underneath, smoking tired engine. BUT THIS REALLY IS EASY. Throw in a Moss interior kit, cover the dash in matching vinyl, have the exterior repainted. . . not a real lot else needed for a very good sixty year old MG.
