MG A 1600 Mk I, for sale in Stratford, Connecticut, for $25,500.

A nice, clean, rust free Southern MGA, excellent running early MGB engine (1798cc). . compression is 145-150 psi in every cylinder, 65+ psi oil pressure when warm, no smoke AT ALL, SU carbs rebuilt, new splined hubs, 15\"wire wheels, new interior, wood dashboard (nicely done), Mota Lita wood steering wheel, new master cylinders, rebuilt calipers, new wheel cylinders, new pads, shoes, and flex lines, new shocks, new rack boots, new battery, new starter switch, excellent wiring harness, wipers and heater work as do all of the gauges, fairly new tonneau, very tight front end, rebushed steering column, performance exhaust system, when last restored fitted with new wood floors, frame sandblasted and painted, good top and side curtains, BRG with black interior. And just wet sanded, buff to a show finish.

We have done a good number of these engine conversions. . what is nice is that only an expert could tell a 1600 MGA engine from an early MGB engine. . even the mechanical tach drive on the back of the engine is indentical. BUT with 200 more cc, more power and torque. While the A engine was rated at 78hp, the B is 98hp. And with a hotter cam and some head work, substantially more power is available. In my last A, we bored the B engine to 2 liters, fitted a high lift cam, twin HS6 SUs, headers and got around 140hp.

Consider this. . the much heralded MGA Twin cam was rated at 108hp in the early high compression version yet only 100hp in later (and more reliable) lower compression examples. And from owning both twin cams and a late model Deluxe, I know the rear disc brakes do virtually nothing. Hence, this B powered A becomes a wonderful compromise. 98hp, disc brakes, wire wheels (never available on twin cams), and as sweet a Spring/Summer/Fall classic sports car as exists.
