About Grand Marquis
The Mercury Grand Marquis is a sedan that is considered to be full size that operates in a rear wheel manner. A division of the Ford Motor Company known as Lincoln-Mercury sells it. This vehicle is the flagship car in the Mercury line with a nameplate that has been used since 1975. The Grand Marquis did not become its own specific model until the early 1980s and the car was originally very similar to the Crown Victoria from Ford. Once the Crown Victoria was discontinued in 2007, the Grand Marquis took its place on the market.
The Mercury Grand Marquis vehicle is put together in Canada today, though in the 80s it was manufactured and produced in the Ford factory that is located in St. Louis, Missouri. When Mercury was discontinued as a brand altogether in 2010, the retail production of the vehicle also ceased, though fleet sale productions continued for another year. The Grand Marquis was the last Mercury produced early in 2011.
The Marquis first showed up on the scene as the Monterey in 1967. The name Marquis eventually replaced Monterey in 1975 and the car was viewed as having taken a step up at that time. It became its own individual model by 1983 in order to replace the Cougar models, which were unpopular wagons and sedans. Since that time, the Grand Marquis has enjoyed four different generations, some of which have multiple body styles.
The first generation of Grand Marquis vehicles came onto the scene in 1983 when the nameplates were placed on a Fox mid-size vehicle. It also stayed on the Panther vehicle as the flagship sedan of the Mercury Company. At that time, the vehicles were produced within the United States at the St. Louis Assembly plant, owned by Ford. That production was moved to Canada during the 1985 model changes, which includes a central fuel injection, a new grille and different taillights.
At that time, the Grand Marquis came in three different body styles. Consumers could buy a station wagon, a four-door sedan, or a two-door version. The station wagon version was discontinued in 1983 because it shared much of the style and trim of other sedans in Mercury lines.
By 1988, the exterior received quite a few changes and the interior got a fresh new style. On the outside, the grilled rounded out and the header front panel was changes. The changes brought the vehicle closer in style to the rest of the Mercury options and allow the emblems to be easier to recognize without really looking. The interior got new head restraints and a one-piece wood trim dashboard along with driver's side airbags and many other changes.
The second generation of the vehicle came out in 1992 with the most extensive changes the cars ever saw. It had all new sheet metal exterior styles, which made it more round and aerodynamic than before. The vehicle was refreshed once again in 1995 with less chrome and reduced turn signal sizes.
The third generation of the Mercury Grand Marquis hit the market in 1998 with a complete redesign including new hoods, bumpers, lights, mirrors and much more. It looked similar to the last model, but the small interior changes allowed for more optional features.
