This beautiful code #R107 - 1974 Mercedes 450SL convertible is a numbers matching 4520cc - V8 mated to a 3-speed automatic transmission. This low mileage car, 63,918 miles to be exact, is very well documented and has all the original manuals and warranty information. It is a very clean car, inside and out, and drives out well. It is optioned & accessorized just like you would expect a luxury car would be. Included are power steering, power brakes, air conditioning, AM/FM radio with a CD player and leather interior. The color is a beautiful code #735 Astral Silver Metallic over a black leather interior.

The SL design, was introduced in 1971and lasted through 1989. It was the longest lasting series ever produced by Mercedes, after the G class. This particular 450SL design, the 3rd generation, was introduced in 1973 and lasted through 1980. It is a legacy and still will turn heads today. The proven 90o V8 is a 4520cc - 4-stroke engine that produces 222hp with 278ft lbs of torque at 5000rpm. If you want to go fast they recorded a top speed of 134mph. The R107 took the chassis components of the mid-size Mercedes W114 model and mated them to the larger engines from the S-class (W116). The SL variant, chassis number 107044, was a 2-seat convertible with a standard soft top and hardtop and optional folding rear seats for the rear bench.

Whenever Mercedes introduced models they generally incorporated a number of new technical features into their sporty cars. This series is no exception with primary emphasis being placed on comfort and safety. One example being the rear tail lamps. They had grooves so the rain and dirt would not stick to the lenses but be blown away as the car was going forward. Another being a material developed jointly by Mercedes and Teldix. It was called (ESEM) or ElastoElement-Methode. This system employed a computer to analyze each component relative to the total strength of the entire body. With this concept it was possible to increase the strength of the windshield posts by 50%. Then the posts could then, be designed so that rainwater would be deflected upwards and over the car rather than against the side windows. In addition the corrugations on the lower body sides also tended to keep the windows free from mud and slush that was being picked up by the tires. I could go on but these are just some of the examples that were designed into cars like this. This car shows no rust or body panel replacements. The paint is original and glossy and the hides looks like several bottles of Lexol have been applied to them over the years. The car drives straight and with accuracy. It will be reliable. With buying this car you will know that it was designed by engineers that had safety and comfort foremost in their minds, not by the stylists that usually have the most input. Least I say that the body panels are straight and tight. Least I say that an investment like this will only go up.
