About Diablo

Top

The Lamborghini Diablo is one of the most iconic cars ever built by Lamborghini, with its V12 engine and vertical opening doors. First launched in 1990, the mid engined Italian devil had a life span of 11 years and was superseded by the Murcielago.

The Lamborghini Diablo was built as a replacement for the Countach, a car designed to be a head turner for a project that reportedly cost 6,000,000,000 lira. The 5.7 litre V12 produces an impressive 492 bhp. 0-62 mph stands at 4.5 seconds with a top speed of 202 mph, making it one of the fastest and most desirable cars on the market at the time.

The Diablo went one better than its predecessor with the introduction of rear wheel drive and a mid engine in order to improve the weight distribution and ultimately the handling. Subsequent Lamborghini's adopted a four wheel drive system, as seen in the Diablo VT.

The equipment within the Diablo also set it apart from previous models, with the introduction of adjustable seats, electric windows and stereo as standard. A number of expensive extras were also available including a factory fitted luggage set and a Breguet clock for the dashboard, the latter costing in excess of $10,000.

The Lamborghini Diablo VT, viscous traction, was brought to market in 1993 and saw the introduction of all wheel drive. The VT saw a number of modifications to the aesthetics including front air intakes to aid brake pad cooling, a remodelled dashboard design and a number of engine refinements.

The SE30 was designed as a street legal racer in 1994, with an improved 523 bhp and a reduction in weight. One area in which the company reduced the weight was by removing glass windows in favour of fixed Plexiglas. Luxury features were also removed such as air conditioning, while race seats were also added to give more of a racing feel.

In 1999 Lamborghini launched a roadster version of the Diablo, with a further 30 limited edition cars rolling off the production line in 2000. It was designed as a final salute to the model, produced in only two colours, titanium metallic and yellow to ensure it stood out.

Lamborghini continues to design cars which are loud, bold and turn heads. The Diablo raised the benchmark for super cars with performance, handling and those amazing gull wing doors.
