About Jeep
COMPANY
The Jeep brand holds the distinction of being the oldest off-road vehicle, having inspired many subsequent automakers, such as British-based Rover, to design their own version. Currently owned by Chrysler, the first Jeeps were produced as a part of the war effort by Willys-Overland Motors, when domestic automobile production in the United States was halted in favor of producing vehicles for use in combat situations abroad.
The utility of the Jeep model is unmistakable. Four-wheel drive and an 80-inch wheelbase allowed it to be used over varying terrain and in all weather conditions. It quickly became the primary vehicle of the United States Army and that of its allies during World War II.
Designed by Willys-Overland Motors, the company introduced its Jeep model to the world by driving it up the steps of the U.S. Capitol building, showcasing its ability to navigate nearly any terrain challenge. Called the Model MB, 640,000 of them were produced during the war years, commissioned for use as general conveyance vehicles as well as performing necessary functions as army ambulances and firefighting pumpers. There was even an amphibious model, though it was not considered a great success.
Jeep did not enter into broad civilian use until after the war. In 1946 Willys released the Jeep Station Wagon, the first mass-market model of the Jeep brand for civilian use. It was to prove highly popular with people living in the new suburbs that were springing up around America in the early post-war years. With an all-steel body and a four-cylinder engine, it was easily produced and affordably priced.
Changing hands several times, Jeep was purchased as a part of the greater AMC brand by Chrysler Motors in 1987. Just in time to capitalize on the booming sport utility market, Chrysler released the Jeep Wrangler, a model that was set to appeal to on-road drivers. The Wrangler featured lower ground clearance than previous models, but made up for it with improved wider spring suspension for a more comfortable ride. The interior was designed more for the office commute than a mud-splattered weekend ride. Subsequent versions of the Wrangler have followed, always incorporating advances in comfort and improved vehicle design.
While the origin of the name Jeep is disputed, one thing has always remained clear. The brand has been the byword for rugged dependability over diverse terrain since its inception and the Jeep brand continues into the new century as a versatile and affordable utilitarian vehicle both on and off the road.
