The Jaguar XJS was launched in 1975 and had the relatively daunting task of replacing the outgoing E-Type.

While it may not quite hold the same place in the annals of history as the E-Type, the XJS managed to prove itself a worthy grand tourer over the years and was built until the mid 1990s, which proved that it had staying power.

The first XJS had a V12 engine and could hit 60 miles per hour in 7.6 seconds before going on to top 143mph on a straight. This meant that in performance terms it was capable of matching up to many other powerful sports cars of the day and it was actually more aerodynamic than the E-Type.

When the 1980s arrived the XJS received something of a revamp, with the 1981 model getting an improved engine which was able to operate more efficiently and also provide more power, with 295hp on tap rather than the previous 263hp.

Fresh alloy wheels, more chrome on the bumpers and a variety of interior alterations to the trim meant that the XJS managed to look refreshed as it entered a new decade.

In 1983 a convertible XJS was launched and buyers were also able to choose a model with a smaller 3.6 litre engine if the V12 muscle was not within their price range.

In 1991 the XJS was given its final overhaul, with a major facelift being applied across the range. This included larger windows and a new four litre engine option, with a convertible arriving a year later.

At the top end the V12 edition had a larger six litre engine which could produce 304bhp and braking performance was improved to help compensate for this.

In 1995, to mark the 60th anniversary of Jaguar, the XJS range was joined by Celebration models, which are seen by enthusiasts as being the most appealing iteration of this family of cars.

1996 was the year in which the XJS was phased out, since Jaguar had found a worthy replacement in the form of the XK8. However, it has remained a popular classic to acquire and is still supported by a large number of people to this day.
