About XJR

Top

The Jaguar XJR, or more specifically, the XJR-15 is an extremely rare and collectable car indeed, as only 53 were ever produced. This model was based on the sports-prototype race car that was specifically produced for the Le Mons 24-hour race. Produced by the British manufacturers, Jaguar, between 1990-1992, the XJR-15 featured an aerodynamically-styled body, which was designed by the McLaren F1 designer Peter Stevens.

The Jaguar XJR series was essentially a series of race cars and the race driver Tom Walkinshaw was the man who decided a road legal version should be made. Thus the XJR-15 was developed from the race cars themselves and is also said to be based on the Jaguar C and D types in addition to the Ferrari 250 GTO and Ford's GT40.

Modifications were made on the cockpit area, which was widened by some 75mm and the roof which was raised by 40mm. The result was a car that, while still retaining a race car appearance, could officially be registered as a road-legal automobile.

Based on a rear-wheel drive construction, the Jaguar XJR -15 also had a mid-positioned 24-valve V12 engine, which produced an impressive 450 bhp. The car also featured an advanced electronic fuel injection system that was controlled by a 'fly by wire' throttle, which, at the time was regarded as a highly advanced technological invention. The transmission was a 6-speed manual, unsynchronized setup.

The Jaguar XJR -15 was also to become the first road legal car to be constructed entirely from carbon fibre and Kevlar composites. Indeed, despite its size, the car is estimated to weigh no more than a standard Volkswagen Golf.

Meanwhile, the suspension was a fully-independent type that featured non-adjustable shock absorbers from the Bilstein stable, which were fitted all round. The front end used wide-based wishbones with vertical coil springs fitted at the rear.

The car was extremely well received and road-testers from various quarters were unanimous in praising it. Indeed, one who tested the car for the World Sports Cars magazine, concluded that the XJR-15 actually drove better than a Ferrari 348. Nonetheless, the car offers very little in a practical sense, the driver being forced to 'step into' the driver's seat over a wide sill. There is also virtually no space for storage.
