About XJ220
The Jaguar XJ220 was a 3.5 litre twin turbo charged V6 supercar. Built from 1992 until 1994 there were only 281 mid engine racers produced. Until the release of the McLaren F1 in 1994, the XJ220 was the fastest production car with a top speed of 217 mph. The car was fitted with a five speed manual transmission. The car retailed at a staggering Ј460,000.
The Jaguar XJ220 was modified to create a racing version in the XJ220C for GT racing. The racer was entered into Le Mans in 1993 and actually beat Porsche by two laps. A total of three XJ220's competed, with only the winning car finishing.
The XJ220 was a beautiful machine, with wonderfully curved lines which hug the road. The engine is also visible through the glass rear window, though this does make visibility for the driver minimal.
The production car was released with rear wheel drive, compared to the four wheel drive version featured in the concept car. Rear wheel drive was opted for in order to decrease weight. Other changes to the concept car included a V6 instead of the original V12.
At the outset Jaguar set a number of goals for the car to achieve in terms of performance, which included a top speed of over 200 mph and a 0-62 time of a slick 3.6 seconds. The team also wanted the car to be as light as possible, despite its size.
The Jaguar XJ220 was one of the first cars to take advantage of down force, in the form of under body airflow. This would ensure that the car stuck to the ground at high speed and improve overall stability.
The Jaguar has a fantastic pedigree of speed, holding the Nurburgring lap record for an impressive 8 years from 1992 until 2000. The lap of 7:46:37 was over 30 seconds quicker than its nearest rival.
Martin Brundle took the XJ220 to a top speed of 217.1 mph at the Nardo Ring in 1992. Due to the nature of the track the 217.1 mph was equivalent to 223 mph on a straight road. The car was modified slightly to achieve this by disconnecting the catalysts and increasing the rev threshold to 7900 rpm.
