You might want to mention where you live! I'm sure that if you live in California, for example, you wouldn't want to be getting a lot of e-mails about rentals in Minnesota.

We are looking for one or two classic cars (old Mustangs are the bride's car of choice!) to drive a wedding party from Leesburg, VA to Purcellville, VA on May 27th. We would only need the cars from 4:45 - 6:00 p.m. and would, of course, be willing to pay the owner/owners or the Car Club for supplying this transportation. We are not asking to drive your cars, but would instead appreciate renting them with you as the driver! Any help you can provide would be appreciated.

Jennifer, you may have some difficulty in actually renting such a car, unless you can find a company that does this. You see, if you pay an individual to rent his car and there's any sort of accident, he risks a huge liability, since his insurance company won't cover the car if it's rented out.

Best bet is to post a message on your company's or church's bulletin board asking if anyone knows someone with a classic car who would be willing to transport you to the wedding. (We're all only one or two steps removed from an antique car owner!) You could arrange to reimburse the owner under the table, or (if he / she was a good soul) simply offer to feed them at the reception afterwards. I've heard of people doing this sort of thing just for the fun of it. If any sort of liability is incurred during the process of moving you, the car's owner simply reports to his insurance company that he was doing a favor for a friend, not renting his car out.

You might also contact your local AACA (Antique Automobile Club of America) region, and ask them if any members are willing to do this sort of thing. You'll find a list of local AACA's at the website http://www.aaca.org/regions/list.aspx . Not guaranteed to work, but it's a possibility.

You could try classic car shows. I remember a few times as a child when someone would come up to my grandfather at a car show and ask him if he would drive them away from a wedding, and he usually did it. It will probably cost you a couple hundred dollars, but that's not a bad price.

Another plus is that if someone says no, you can just go up to the owner of the next car you really like. Just make sure you ask where they are from first, because if they drove 100 miles to get to the show, they probably won't want to do it for a wedding.

You have more options, and

The biggest problem you'll find, in approaching individuals to rent you a car, is the liability involved. If there's an accident during the wedding, involving his car, the owner of the antique car is likely to discover that his insurance company won't help him. That's because his car is only insured as a private passenger vehicle, not as a "for hire" vehicle.

For this reason, old car owners (unless they are rental companies such as those mentioned above) won't accept money to drive the bride and groom from the church. You MIGHT want to ask around at the office as to who knows someone with an old car. (You don't have to throw a stone very far to hit an antique car owner). Then -- when you find a car you like -- contact the owner and explain the situation. You could then offer him (and maybe his wife!) some sort of deal where they're invited to the reception and get free food, or something. Or, if you both happen to know a mutual friend, maybe the car owner will do this as a favor to the friend. Or something!

As an old car owner I would never rent out my car (because of the liability) but if I knew I was going to get to gorge myself at a wedding reception and hang out with the rich & famous, I might be persuaded!

I am in the Washington DC area and am very interested in renting a Bentley (of almost any vintage) for the weekend of June 6-8, 2008. I appreciate the links that others have posted, but none had any Bentleys. I realize this is a something of a long shot, but if anyone has any leads, I'd appreciate hearing from you. Thanks!

My brother drove me to my wedding in his beautiful black 1941 Buick Series 91 6-passenger Sedan. First he transported my bride, who was staying at his house the night before. After that was all done, he came to my house and picked me up. It was cool.

Yesterday, July 5, 2008, my brother was to drive a friend of a friend's bride to her wedding in the same car. He was called in to work, so he asked me to do it. I showed up at the right time and waited for the bride--she was over 45 minutes late for the ride. The father of the bride came out and told me that she was almost ready. I went to start the car. Nothing. Checked all the switches and kill switch my brother has in this beautiful automobile. Everything was where it should be. Tried again. Nothing. I quickly explained the situation to the father of the bride. We decided to push the car and pop the clutch method of starting the old Buick. So here we were, a 44 year-old driver and two old guys (in suits), pushing a huge 1941 Buick down the curvy suburban street for a pop clutch start. Wow. We did it and got the Buick turning again. Went to the church and dropped off the bride. Went for a ride to charge up the battery. All seemed good. Took the bride and groom back to the house after the ceremony. They took a modern auto to Chicago for a quick photo shoot. My brother came and relieved me. The happy couple were very late in coming back from the photo shoot and called my brother to tell him they were not going to make it back to the house for the 1941 Buick ride to the reception. My brother went to start the car to go home. Nothing. Could not start his own car. He called my dad to come rescue him. My dad (an old car nut too) and one of his old car buds came and they messed with it. Was a bad battery cable. Fixed it up and got it home. Good thing the bride and groom did not make it back to the house for the photo shoot. They would not have got the ride.
