Thanks, almost makes it sound like something I could do. I bought the seal a few years ago along with a Toris gasket. Should I have some sort of o-ring too? I really need to go out to the shop and start digging through the manual i guess.

But... it still got you home!!! I had a similiar problem on a Fairlane once. I found the connections at the back of the alternator were damaged. Of course, I didn't find this until I had bought and installed the new GM 1-wire for it.
