Having done this before, my guess is that the distributor gear is off by one tooth. It will start, but when you try to give it the gas, the timing becomes too far advanced and the engine dies.

I agree with Arkiejazz too - Mostly because I have a '37 utility pickup and the gas filler comes out the fender, not the body. Thhis should be a nice project for some though. Sell the pickup bed separately, IMHO. John
