RL, I can't understand your reasoning of a "W" configuration. In the H8 only two pistons are on t.d.c. at anyone time. The crank throws are 90 deg apart with two in each plane at opposing ends of the shaft.

Sounds like you have a fouled starter worm, gunked up with dirt and oil. It's not too difficult to dismantle. Give the worm thread a good clean out with gasoline, and leave it completely dry. It could also be that your contacts are dirty…

Overdrive question
Try pulling the control knob out when you are driving. If it comes out, then the overdrive is not engaged. Once the solenoid is energised you cannot disengage the overdrive until you are below cut-in speed, or you use the kick-down.

You cannot just "add a bigger pinion" because it will not mesh correctly with the spiral worm on the shaft.

Grinding Tappets ( Cam followers )1935-1947 6 and 8 Hudson engines.
I beg to differ, reground lifters will last just as long as a new one. They are hard all the way through, not case hardened.
