Bob, as to your question, it's to do free-wheeling mechanism. Too complicated to explain, but the transmission would be wanting to go in both directions at once, and hence most likely destroy something.

What are you using for spark plugs and distributor cap?
You need to get a bit deeper then just plugs and dist cap if it "Starts but doesn't stay running" as you say. It could just be the condensor, but it could also be the fuel pump, coil, or other things. Plugs surely are not a probl…

Voltage regulator circuit
Krille, if you are fitting the original VRD4008A regulator, then the connections are marked A, B, F, and T. The T terminal connects to the dash light. You need the Hudson Mechanical Procedure Manual to set thewse regulators up.

'37 Terraplane starting and running issue
You need to check the float level. Take the lid off the bowl and check if there is fuel in there, if so then you have an air leak or blocked jets, but being a twin throat I would doubt that both main jets would be blocked.

I reckoned my '53 Hornet looked "toothless" without the inverted triangle, so I fitted a set. Not a great lot of adapting to make them fit, and looks much better in my opinion. I can always say it's an export model option!

RL, I can't understand your reasoning of a "W" configuration. In the H8 only two pistons are on t.d.c. at anyone time. The crank throws are 90 deg apart with two in each plane at opposing ends of the shaft.
