Hello, I have a 1950 dodge coronet with the flat 6 all original. Tryiny to get it running, has been sitting 7 years.Need some info on wiring diagram, and why possibly no spark to plugs? There is a spark every now and then(sometimes a good spark and sometimes a weak spark) if i take the coil wire off the dist. and try and arc it off the block. But i dont know where to start? I do have knowledge of older GM stuff but at a loss here with this old sled?

Thanks in advance for any advise!

    Bob.

Do have a new coil , new plug wires, new cap and rotor.

I would start by making sure that your points are clean and set properly.

Secondly, check the voltage to the coil (with the points open) and check the coil at the distributor side with a test light and while cranking the engine, make sure that the light flashes.

You know i havent set the points on a car in 20 years? Would you be able to refresh my memory? Also what should the voltage be? 6 volts? (duh).stupid question ! lol !!!

Bump the engine over until the points rubbing block is on the high point of the distributor cam. You may need to adjust the points so that a .020 feeler gauge will slide snugly between the points.

You may want to take some emery cloth and slide in between the points prior to adjusting them so that you can clean them up real good. Be sure to clean them with eiter compressed air or use a business card to remove any debris afterwards.

While the distributor cap is off and after you set the points, you could have someone crank the engine to watch and see if the points continue to spark. If they do, put everything back together and fire it up.

    Keep us posted.

Ok, I set the points. had it turning over and the points sparked, good at first but then seemed to be very weak or spuratic? The car actually started at one point and sputtered for about 5 seconds. But couldnt get it to do it again. Its like the spark is on and off? Could it be the condencer in the dist.? Think im going to put a new condencer and points in tomorrow, and try again. What do you think?

Instead of setting the points at 20 you might want to set them at 19/18. The cam might be worn and when they are set at 20 the opening is too much. I have to do this with my 39 desoto.

Did you take the Dist out of the engine block. If you did, then did you put it back in the block in the correct manner so that when you took it out you are st on the correct firing order.

I always mark the block with chalk and aslo the position of the rotor onthe body of the dist. Since the dist shaft has a slot you might be out 180 degree.

This is just some thoughts. Clean up the grounds onthe car 6v needs good grounds to complete the curcuits.

Yep i hear ya. I never took out the dist. But it had some marks on the dampner i used to get TDC. It ran for about 10 seconds last night. But then lost spark again. Yes all the grounds are very old and im going to redo a few wires here and there. How is the wire held from the coil to the dist? it seems like a clip on the bottom of the dist. but cant see it very well as its on the bottom of the dist. That wire seems old and lose? But dont want to break it off the dist.

    Thanks,Bob
