1956 fairlane power steering question
-
I'm thinking of buying a 56' Fairlane for my wife but the I would need to add power steering to the car. Does anyone know where I can wither find the parts, and/or a conversion kit. Also, is this a complicated project? any help you can provide will be appreciated as I've not had much luck finding any info on this.

On that 56 if you need to stop the car as well--ford granada /lincoln versaille spindle/rotor/caliper bolt right on--the versaille also has a disc 9 inch rear----i dont know what power steering units interchange but there have been alot of articles in car magazines----57 up fords use an LTD spindle/rotor/caliper---good luck bob

i ask my ford guru george what power steering box he used on his 56 sedan delivery--he said it is an early model isuzu trooper---2 bolt holes match the ford frame--he had to make a small notch in frame and drill one more bolt hole which he supported with a tubing sleeve so the frame wouldnt collapse under bolt tightening----he also used the lincoln versaille spindle disc brake setup---there is a late model ford box that can be used but about 1/2 the frame has to cut away to use it---george didnt like that idea----bob

I personal would use a factory power steering unit, they are pretty easy and straight forward in installing them verse buying some after market kit in which you have to cut this or that, drill here and cut there. The original set-up directly replace your manual steering draglink and thats left is to bolt the pump bracket and add-on pulley to motor. These original set-up work very efficiently and were designed to fit your Ford. If your interested in locating a used or rebuilt set-up I can help, I would recommend a rebuilt one to avoid having a problem with the unit functioning properly or having a leak because of an old seal or hose. Thanks, James
