1956 Ford Customline; Weakest Link
-
Replacing the engine and tranny with more than adequate power. Which is the WEAKEST link, that we "should be prepared to replace" if we "over do" it?
The drive shaft? the differential? or the axle?
Yes, I know they've ALL got to be replaced, so have that plan for a "rainy day" but for now, just wondering what we should be the most cautious of?
Oh, it's [assumed from factory?] 272 Y-Block, single exhaust, and std tranny, which I presume to be "Ford-O-Matic".
Thanks,
LarryR : ) -
OK, I apologize for responding to my own post.... can the posts be "edited" for improvement or errors? how? ............... the reason I'm doing this is I might be misleading some readers..... I said "std tranny", meaning the "one that comes WITH it [auto]" not a "std shift" or "stick shift"; it's AUTOMATIC, std NOT special.
Sorry,
LarryR : ) -
Others more knowledgeable to power will probably chime in but, I would have to ask what you mean by "more then adaquate power"?
I'm not sure how much power an original 56 Differential will take but I would replace the u-joints at a minimum.

One more thing.
On your original post you will see at the bottom, three buttons. One of them says edit. Use that one to make your changes.

312 y block engins were built up to over 400 horse power - that rear end will take it -[if its in good shape]--
junior johnson raced one in nascar on the beaches of datonia
to replace that rear end you will have to have a 9in shortened-- that rear end was used untill 58 i think--cant remember when they changed--
i put a 289 up against that trans and had no problems -you will need the 5 bolt bell houseing --- if you go late 289 -302 -351 use the trans with the motor it came with--[6 bolt bell]
a FE will fit if you use crites motor mounts-- FE- 352-390-410-427-428-
the 383 engins -[ 429 and 460 will also fit -but then you will need a 9in rear- and a c4 or c6 trans to handle the power--
if your engine is running good or can be rebuilt --why change -- changeing to just change serves no purpose--
56 fords are purrty cars-- enjoy it -- please dont tear this car apart and let it die-- i see so many go to the junkie because people got in way over their means and talents-- thanks for listening -
also- when you start putting bigger engines into that car your going to run into brake problems --and front end up grades and rebuilds to handle the weight -- its fun to go fast --but you life depends on stopping also--
figure your budget -- double it - then double it again-- you might be close then--- figur how long its going to take to build car -- -then add 5 years -- - -
heres my car -- 3 years to build -- just getting ready for paint -- changed out 289 put in hipo 390 frame off rebuild - disk brakes- built 9in rear- over 12 thousadn dollars in parts and i do all my own work--

Thanks.......... I see it now........... but when I originally posted, I SWEAR, uh, er, uh "affirm" that it was NOT there..... maybe I wasn't "logged in"?
thanks

that rear end should be a dana 44 and it is plenty strong-- and there is all kinds of gears and accessories for it thanks to the intrepid 4X4 guys--the first and narrowest 9 inch should be the 57 t-bird----if you built the engine to 400 horse probably the small ujoints would be the weak link followed by the auto trans----but then i am a mopar kind of guy--i just steal the old ford parts----bob

I think a '57 9 inch will bolt right in. Go to "yblocksforever" webpage. There's tons of info there on this subject. Might check this site out http://50chevy.freeservers.com/Suspension_Widths.html#Suspension

I don't think you will have aproblem selling that. It's in pretty nice shape and I am sure someone would be happy to have it.
Have you tried craigslist?
