1947 Hudson Super Six

Here are some pictures of our project 47' Hudson. More pictures in the photo bucket link below. Today was the first day I got to work on her. I got the front end taken off. The drivers side fender is in worse shape than the other side. Most of the bolts came off easy a few broke and a few I had to grind the tops off. I hope to get some more done over the weekend. Lots of work to be done but, it's well worth it. I'll keep you up dated.

Yo King! Looks like you got more done in a day than I have in the past month (or more)...

You appear to also be in the middle of building your 'building' to work in... :confused:

Took me about a year to get my work area in shape - and I'm still not satisfied with it - but then, is anyone really ever completely satisfied with their workshop? (retorical question, somewhat akin to the question about 'why a chicken crosses the road'...). :rolleyes:

My work shop is just a lean to I added to the shed. No room in the shed! My other project is hiding in there. I have stone coming this weekend. I'm hoping to get the doors of and a few other thing done on the car this weekend. I'll update as I go.

King - Good, solid work... Stone is good for drainage, although it is not as comfortable as laying on the ground - but an adequate supply of cardboard will take care of that (from the pictures, I see you're already using the backyard mechanic's best friend!)...

1947 Hudson Super Six

We only have a few plans for it so far. Right now are plans are:

Front sub frame from a 81 LTD w/disc brakes

New 2x4 square tube chassis from the front sub frame back

Street rod 4-link suspension w/coil over shocks

33x21.5x15 Mickey Thompson tires in the rear

I have a few body mods in mind, No door/truck handles, different tail lights, 07 Mustang GT fog lights mounted in the grill, custom grill and might do something with the head lights,

That's about all the plans for now. Once I get the inside gutted I'll start planning that out.

I hope all that makes sense. I don't want to restore the car but, turn it into a hot rod for the family to enjoy. Any suggestion please post them. This is my first hot rod I'm building.

It's been so long since I started the 49 Hudson project - I started that one in my carport (at least I had concrete to roll around on) I commend you for working in the "lean to"

I appreciate your posts and enthusiasm, makes me want to get going on my projects as I'm writing this post!

With winter coming along are you just doing the teardown outside and will be moving things into your shop?

A little more progress on the beast. I got the back and front seats out. The back floor is solid. The front floor is worst then I expected. :eek: I also got the dash all apart. The one thing I did not expect was the dash it self is part of the body. :mad: All in all I got a little more done than I thought I would.

Are the carbs worth anything? I was going to put then up for auction.

I been following your Project work and admire your speed in dissembly. Just to help inspire you like a lot of us, I began working on Hudsons outside in the north and still work out back in one garage on a dirt floor with little heat.

I restored two '47's, one a St Rod Truck with a Trans-Am front Clip, Chevy power, and another Truck back to original condition. (Attached pictures as found). Both were way further gone than the pictures revealed and your pictures duplicate my floors. I had to make many panels in addition to the floor. However, In hindsight, I think building is as much fun as driving afterward.

The St Rod took about 3yrs working nights & Wknds, including waiting for upholstry & paint, while the original '47 that I finished recently took much longer because I did a couple of other Car Projects in-between.

All the Items that will not use I suggest putting on e Bay...

I am no expert, but If you run into any snags feel free to ask or shoot me a PM.

I should be moving the Hudson there on Saturday.

Also can somebody tell me how to get the chrome off from around the front windows. I've looked at it but have not tried to remove it yet. I don't want to bend it all up. I should have some up dates over the weekend.

I put the two carbs up on ebay. Looks like they will be going to a new home.

It's pinched on there. My recamendation is don't remove it. I've done cars just like that and only taped that area off. Even had the bodies sand blasted with that chrome piece still on the car and covered with a special rubbery tape that the sand blaster used. Just work around it.

What I meant was leave the little stainless trim on the car, not the windshield. You can still remove the windshield to the inside of the car by cutting the rubber out and the glass will fall to the inside of the car. Then you can paint, replace the rubber and glass, whatever you want.

I was lucky on one project Trk by pushing out the windows then re-used the rubber, while the other I bought everything new from K Gap. I encourage you to contact them for a Catalog. K Gap also has the special window Rubber that will hold that small Stainless window Trim.

Additionally, Dont be overwhelmed with the floor. Make the new floor as one peice with a larger center 'hump' for the automatic. I made in two pcs with a lip then spot welded together. End result its all one pc connected to the original good metal. It would be nice to (soft) sand blast the bad areas first.

If installing a different front clip first be sure to take a lot of Hudson measurements including ride height and total width. I found my Firebird Clip was real wide and when finishing I had to use 'O' offset wheels to clear the front fender inner edges.

When Installing, be sure to measure diagonally a few times. Actually, new body mounts took longer than attaching the Sub... If I were to do another I might consider one of the 'bolt in' or weld in crossmembers using the popular Mustang 11 Suspension and retain the stock frame & body mounts. There is no right or wrong way to do it though...

The Steer Column is easy to fab a bracket at dash and at floor. The Swing pedal/power brake booster bolts right to the dash by simple drilling.. Its all kind of fun updating....

1947 Hudson Super Six

I went and picked up the engine for my Hudson Sunday night. 1956 Chrysler Cross Fire 331 Hemi. Out of a fire truck with less than 20,000 miles on it. The heads have been of for years. The cylinders look like they will clean up. I think this will be pretty neat in the Hudson. I got the Hudson over to the new work shop today. I should be able to move along with it now.

I also found a tag on the passenger side door jam #3123060 Any idea what it's for?
