53 Belair with a 235. Distributor help

    I've got a 53 Bel Air with a 235 straight 6.

When I start the car, after 12 years it fires up fine but about 5 seconds in it dies. It doesn't even warm up to idle. If I start it and immediately open the throttle on the carb it rev's and rev's and rev's but as soon as I stop it takes a few seconds and then dies.

My vacuum advance (or what it was called for the 53) is stripped. My vacuum line will not thread into it. Could this be the culprit, or would it be the carb?

Quickly.....yes a vacuum leak could be cause. You have one of those bolt on advances, so you either need to repair it or find a new one. Try capping off the vacuum line to troubleshoot your starting problem. If it capping off the line works...you know what to do.

I would change the condenser in the distributor. From what I remember of the cars form the 60's, a bad condensor would let the car run a couple minutes and then quit. JN

Well now I cannot start the car.

Last night I took the distributor and cleaned it up. We took off the vac advance to clean and put it back on (note that I did not mark it's original position. :( )

I also took off the carb (it has a big leak) and replaced it with my carb from my 63 nova wagon.

It will backfire from the carb but it won't start.

If the carb. is backfiring and won't start now after what you did, then my guess would be that it is 180 degrees out.
