Went On A 50 Mile Cruise With My 53 Hornet, Just Before I Got There It Started Missing. Step On Gas And It Would Hardly Move Forward. Got To Des. And Let It Sit. Could See No Gas In Filter Bowl. Let It Sit Awhile. Was Hard To Start When I Got Back, Once Running, It Would Run Good In Neutral But Start Missing When Put In Gear. Was Able To Get Home, Drove On Express Was At About 55, Still Missing Some, But Once On Side Streets And Going It Would Move, Would Stall Out On Stops, Hard To Stop, Would Ppre Water On Gas Pump, It Would Start, Run Good In Nuetral, Them Would Hardly Move In Gear.

Sounds like one of 3 things...

    1. Points might be closed or shot.

I would check and inspect them. Then if they are good, reset.

    2. Change Condenser.

I had a simialar problem and it turned out to be a bad condenser.

Make sure that nothing is shorting out inside the distributer. Check the connection wher the point and condenser are srewed together.

    3. Install a back up electric fuel pump. They are cheap and make a good back up. Great for cold starts and if you start to vapor lock. If you instill the electric pump, wire it up to a toggle under the dash. That way when your driving and you think you start to vapor lock, just flip the switch and off you go......

It could also be the vacuum advance isn't working. Not wanting to run under a load sounds like a spark advance problem. No fuel in the filter sounds like an obstruction in the fuel line, maybe debris in the tank plugging the pick up. Change the points and condenser first though. Do the simple things first then eliminate other problems one at a time.

Could be a fuel system obstruction. Check your filter(s) and lines.

The Screen in the pump is one we don't think about but it shut my 36 down and made it vapor lock from the high vacuum.

So true. And a very "fine" screen it is.

All of this is good advise - but have you checked to make sure that your exhaust heat riser is not stuck closed? This will cause the condition and more . Reach down (when cold) and try to move the riser weight, if does not move freely, this could be your problem. If you suspect the bi-metal spring is bad on the assembly, wire it open, remember up is open down is closed.
