Rambo's Update
-
Hi Everyone,
Thanks to all who replied or read through the other thread.
Rambos doing well, sadly we found out today the lump on his side was at Stage 2 and cancerous so it's not over yet
The most likely course of action is another surgery to remove another layer surrounding the area, followed by chemo - but, at least it's a low enough stage that I can take time to research and understand my options going forward.
Which brings me to my next point I am going to put whatever money and time I need to getting the dog healthy so think I am going to sell my 50 Super 6 that I was planning on driving this summer.
1950 Super 6 4dr w/Super Matic, engine runs, doesn't drive.
1 new oil change
2 nearly complete twinh setups (make 1 good one sell the rest)
1 Pridemore Disk Brake Kit (kit only - not installed)
Some rust - but not a rust bucket, this is a good driver level project car.
IF anyone is interested in the 50 Super 6 for the car and extra parts I want 4200.00 - I won't diker on the price- it's what I have into it and I'll use the money for Rambos care.
I can provide towing for cost of fuel anywhere within Wa/Id/Or (maybe some extra for time if the distance is too far) -
Dan: Sorry to hear the news, I went through the same thing with my last Lab. However, the treatment worked and he was cured and lived many healthy years after the diagnosis. I used a doctor named Karri Meleo who is now at Animal Cancer Specialists in Lake City Washington. I know she works out of a couple of clinics, but I've been told she's one of the best in her field. Her phone number is 206-364-3733. Good luck and if I can be of any help, let me know. Aaron

Aaron - thanks for the referral.
I'll be sure to call and get a second opinion about my boy. -
Hope everything works out for the best, for both of you. Sorry to hear about the cancer, and sorry to see that you are likely to get rid of the 50 S-6. Hopefully, you got this at an early enough stage, they can offer Rambo a full recovery, and one day, he can hang his head out of your hudson, and feel the wind in his face.
Best!

Phew! It's been a tough week but we came up with a treatment plan and the ol' dog goes under the knive again tomorrow
followed by 3 to 6 months of chemo.
I got a little better news today from the oncologist review in that with the type and grade of MCT (mast cell tumor) with the additional surgery and then chemo that he's got about a 90% chance to kick this "scrap" in the butt and be done.
If cancer it comes back then more surgery, chemo and radiation treatments would probably be in line - but his MCT grade wasn't advanced enough to have to do the combination of radiation with chemo.
Not that I care what any of this costs, but 2 surgeries within a week will be $1700.00, I have no idea what the chemo drugs will cost and if radiation is needed its $4000.00 to start
Like I told my buddy today "Your price per pound just went up!" -
Dan, that's tough news about the cancer but the good news is cancer is getting more and more treatable. All the best wishes for Rambo, I hope you get it all the first time around.

Thanks guys - I just dropped him off at the vets  now what the heck do I do?
I might have to go buy the new GTA game today and get lost for awhile

I'll be thinking of you and Rambo, it sounds like he'll be OK. Thank goodness we have the ability to help our little friends. My oldest dachshund Penny became paralyzed in all 4 legs last Labor Day because of a herniated disc in her neck. $4K and 10 weeks of physical therapy later, she thinks she's a pup again.penny_12097033841001544.JPG640 x 426 - 38K

Laura's min pin got diabetes last year and within a month went blind, it was real tough at first for her but now a year later she can jump up on the bed, jump down on her own and find the dog door and go out to do her business. At some time every evening she sidles up to me to work me for a dog bone. When I get up she stares where she thinks I went, pretty funny sometimes. They adapt much better than we do. Dan, your boy is probably in recovery now resting nicely, get some sleep and he'll be much better in the morning.

I ended up building some steps yesterday afternoon so Rambo wouldn't have to jump up into the truck.
Just as I was finishing with the steps around 7PM last night ~ I get a call from the doc telling me that Rambo is doing well, already ate some food, pooped and was in the back room corrupting all the other animals howling because he missed his daddy
so he suggested Rambo would be happier/better for him if I could come pick him up so I did!
The poor guy has to wear the Halo right now, and he's got a larger incision on his side with drain tubes
It was a long night, neither of us got ,much sleep - but he's home and the doctor was able to get the remainder of the tumor with clean margins without getting into muscle tissues.
I also had the doctor remove another lump that we didn't do the first time - turns out it is also a MCT (mast cell tumor) but wasn't below the skin flap so no too invasive.
The doctor was pretty optimistic that he got the tumorous tissue out and we'll wait til the incisions are healed to start the chemo. So from what I can tell it's going about as well as I can expect right now.
Thanks all for your support and kindness - I was thinking yesterday, how much this has busted me up - how tough this would be if it was your child getting operated on...my hats off to all of you with children who've had to go through medical issues! -
I recently got word from my ex that the Yorkie (her dog - spent more time with me) has cancer. Exploratory surgery showed its spread pretty badly - it's one of those 'it can be removed, but.....' It might be curable, it might not.
So her decision was, since he's 14 years old, and it doesn't seem to be be causing him pain, at the moment, to let him live out his life as best and do what can be done for him.
Cancer in dogs, and cats, is more common that people realize. At the moment there is a fellow walking from Austin, TX, to Boston, MA, with two Great Pyrenees named (and this should interest you) Murphy and Hudson.

Thanks for sharing your story Alex - and everyone else!
Wow - 1000 reads between the 2 Rambo threads I started here
That makes me feel like there's 1000 more people saying a little prayer for my boy to get over this
I pray he gets through this and is around long enough for each and every one of you to meet him, I know I am biased but he's got everything you'd want in a good companion
-
Our prayers are with Rambo. I fully intend to meet him this summer, and may bring Chicadee the Pomeranian up to get acquainted. She's a great judge of character, and I think they would hit it off. In the meantime, I saved that great picture of him, and he will be part of my picture-scrolling screen saver. Hang in there, big guy. . .

Dan,
Sorry to hear about Rambo's problem. I have a lab, named Deuce and he means to me what Rambo means to you. I almost lost Deuce a few months ago and it cost a small fortune, but was worth every penny. I wish Rambo and you the best.
I want to thank you for posting the info about Hudson, Murphy, and Luke. I read about him last night and as my wife and I were going to east Texas today, we managed to hunt them down in Jacksonville Texas at the Cherokee Critter Carnival. Couldn't be a nicer person around. The dogs were fantastic. Stupid me didn't take a camera. I had put my GPS in my camera bag and didn't check it before I left. My wife and I have made a contribution to the Canine Cancer Fund and hope that they can make headway in finding the causes for this terrible illness that sickens and takes our little buddies from us.
Get well soon, Rambo, and you hang in there Dan.
Bob and Deuce
