Hudsons up for auction
-
This could be some good stuff.A crate 308 and some cars.
Go to www.hinsonauctions.com click on Apr.26th.date
I just tried to click on this and it took me to a site in Tn. This auction house is in N.C. Try looking under N.C. state auctions. -
Here you go:
First, the correct URL: http://www.hinsonauction.com/auction_04_26_08.html
Next, some photos:
-
Thanks Jon-your the internet wizard!!!
-
that lis not the type of crate that HUDSON used, looks like it was made much later BILL ALBRIGHT
-
Auction flyer gives a serial no. on the motor, and it has the head on it. Don't believe thay shipped them that way, did they? Walt-LA
-
The auction says the serial number on engine is 5325118. Let's go shopping!
-
That engine in the "crate" looks to me like it was taken out of a car - look at the crud on the manafolds and the side of the engine.

A 55-56 motor. Notice that it has the generator and all acc. on it. Doubt that it came from Hudson that way. Any chance it might be one of the motors that J C Whitney was selling. I remember them as being 56 motors.
-
It looks like a pro crate job. It might be a JCW special or it's still in the crate from the engine rebuild shop. The right side of the block is suspiciously oily.
-
My 52 Hornet has a 55 engine with SN 5320963. The listed engine must be 55-56 with 1/2 inch headbolts etc. Brent
-
That looks like a shipping label on the top of the crate. Sure would like to be able to read it!
-
It may be in a pretty crate, but I just see a used engine with a most of a Twin-H.
-
OK, so someone shipped a used engine.
-
James P. wrote:It may be in a pretty crate, but I just see a used engine with a most of a Twin-H.
I see a "new" engine in a crate. If you look, there is oil all over it,the manifolds, incl.the exhaust. The carb.heat tubes are still new,the bracket for the rear air cleaner doesn't look like it has ever had a air cleaner on it.I am trying to remember what WTN had an article in it,written by Charlie Nau,and it had Hudson engines, complete with generator, starter, distributor, wires, coil, water pump, fuel pump all accesories-etc.. ready to go for $180. from about 1956-57.I have a friend in the club that has one of these and his is NEW or NOS,and looks just about like this, including the caps on both carbs.,with an aluminum head.Look at the plug wires, look at the exh.manifold,no deterioration on it,the 2 front studs still have the pal nuts on the manifold. my friends engine looks like it had cosmoline or equivelent poured on it,about like this does. -
For those who have never seen a Hudson Crate engine prior to the original posting, see the following pictures of another Crate engine that was unearthed... note the same characteristics that Doc Doug pointed out. The engine in the auction is a Hudson replacement engine... without checking this is more likely a 56 vintage replacement as most of the 55 engines I have seen are painted Blue... purely a guess based on historic experiences.

Replacement engines did NOT have serial/motors stamped on them, they were left blank.
-
For those who read the auction flyer and assumed that the serial number for this engine is actually listed... this is an error. The numbers being quoted are actually found on the engine and are the casting numbers for a hi compression Hudson aluminum head and the intake manifold... search the site pictures and you will find pictures that show where the auction found the numbers.
-
forget the engine I want that '54 coupe haha...unless it needs an engine.
-
I'm not familiar with non stepdown sixes, but the fuel line setup on that twin H is not standard step down. Looks like a Hash intake as well. Could very well be one of those JC Whitney crate motors. They were selling both 308's and 262's as I recall.
Anyone in the Dogwood Chapter area planning on going to the auction? Looks like it's near Charlotte on the way to Ashboro. -
OK, I have my $229 in my hand right now. Where do I go to pick up that engine?
-
First, you need to invent a time machine...darn.
-
I am trying to figure out how many cars are really here,3 or 4 ?.Look at the front corner of the faded red car and it has lights for a 52-3 ?,or are my eyes decieving me?. My eyes are failing me-Now that I'm 50!!!
-
I am planning to be at the auction as I live 10 miles from the sale site. The cars were there for years and years, but were few people got to see them. I have heard about them but never was able to talk to anyone that got to see them.
I will try to get in before the sale and get more info.
The 308 would look nice in my pick-up! -

"you" meaning . . . who, exactly? -

I've got one. It's broke though, only goes forward at normal speed. Unless you run it on large amounts of alcohol, but even then you can only skip forward to the next morning.1953 Hornet sedan Twin-H
Custom front springs, drop-blocks out back, Clifford 6-2 headers exiting out back shotgun style, Pertronix, and Flames!
1964 Chevy C-10 Longbed, 396/TH400 lowered just enough and \"easy to touch up\" Black paint.
2003 Ford Crown Victoria Police Interceptor
Caved in quarter and fender. Bad paint. Non-True-Trac heap. But it's paid for. -

Better try boosting the octane rating of that alcohol.
-
Anyone else see the red car is not a '51?? If you go to their website, you can look at the left lower grille molding and it is '52-53?.The green Hornet is a sd.and looks to be a '51,then the '54 cpe.,a 51'next to the red car.The green '51 is in a different location. I think they say there is only 3 cars?
-
How many Hudnuts are going to attend this auction?
-
Went today and looked over the treasures. 3 complete Hudsons and the engine.

what happened with the pink one that was between the 54 coupe and the 51 Hornet in the garage photo?
-
It seems just like yesterday when JC Whitney had Hornet Motors in their Catalogs....I never realized how complete they were unlike todays crate motors ...The Owner must have intended to replace one of the Hudson motors.......Timeless....
Good luck on your bidding... -
All 3 cars seem to have good potential. I really hope they and the engine go to a good home.
-
The pictures of the crate engine I posted must be of a JC Whitney engine also... look carefully at the picture in upper right side of my post and you will see the same label placement as on the engine crate just posted by junkyard. Another interesting thing is the engine in NC was shipped from JCW to the person whose estate is being auctioned! What a find! That engine went from Hudson salvage to JCW to place it is being auctioned... nice to know the history of a NEW Hudson Hornet engine.
-
Maybe I am getting cheap , but nothing followed me home!
The crate engine went for $1700,
The black/white 51 went for $6000
The dark green 54 4dr went for $ 1300
The lt/green 54 2dr went for $ 3000 -
One thing I did notice on the crate engine. The oil filter canister had a decal
from American Motors Corp. It must have been sold as surplus after the buyout.
Sorry I did not get a photo. -
Well, $1,700.00 for a new Hudson engine seems fair. I wonder if the buyer is going to try and use it or keep it as a display. Does anyone think it would have sold for more if it were pre AMC.?
The black/white 4dr seemed really staight. But isn't $6,000.00 a tad pricey? What did the other green 4 dr sell for? -
How much did the Studebakers sell for?
-
6K for the 51 ya got to be kidding me.....www.hudsonmotorcar.org
-
The 24{?} Studebaker went for $1000. One 31 model A tudor went for $2800 and the other carcass went for $about $1500. The "crate" motor turned out to a motor in a crate. It was a 55 AMC 308 from J.C. Whitney as had been reported but it was not new. It appeared to have slight wear but not terribly much. Oil was on the manifold and rear valve cover. Paint had peeled off the head. It looked decent but somebody got way too happy with giving their money away IMO. The only car with a title was the $1700 Hornet. The bidding that went on for the $6000 Hornet was a mind blower. Waaaaay too much money for a car that had no title, didn't run, missing a few parts ,needed rechroming etc, etc, but thats what the man thought it was worth so ..... away goes a happy bidder. Best deal was the 54 Hornet coupe. All three cars had solid frames and had been in either a barn or shed since likely the early sixties. The man who owned them was a pack rat. It started at 9:00 AM and by the time they got around to the cars it was 1:30. The other junk that he had took up an incredible amount of time to sell. There was some automotive stuff for sale but after waiting all day it was getting both hot and late, I left after the Hudsons were sold.
-
The 24 Studebaker in the field with the hudsons went for $4000. The one at the hotdog stand ,the 21? model touring car went for the $1000. Another spare body for the older one went for $2500.
I left around 4:00 and there was still lots of parts left. They started 2 auctions about 3:00 -
Thanks for the info on the prices. I left after they sold the first Fords. That auctioneer was so fulla bull and so slow it was irritating. I took a bunch of photos and will post a link to them tomorrow after I get them to my web page.
Here is a link to the rest of the photos I took yesterday.

Buz. Thanks for posting the photos. I love a good auction with stuff that has been horded away for decades that someone was going to restore someday. Who said collecting is a disease?
