Desperately Need
-
I desperately need a driver door inside door handle and escushion for 1929 Essex coupe. This is the handle with the "collar" that screws into the latch mechanism. Not so much the handle but I need the threaded collar.
Also need the main spring in the latch assembly that pushes the bolt back out after opening the door, or will puchase a whole latch.
I do NOT want to modify the doors with "late model" latches and handles.
I do have a pair of 29' Essex rear fenders. They are very rough but can be saved.
Any offer on the fenders shipped from 97376 zipcode. -
are these the same door springs that we see on e-bay periodically? try typing in door lock springs in e-bay motors. if you type in "hudson door lock springs" there are none currently listed, but if you check in completed listings you can see what i am refering too. they look similiar. have you checked with sammy at northwestern auto supply in grand rapids? he is "good people". tom

Just curious - Are you referring to your impression of 'Ebay' itself, or those who sell their products / merchandise on Ebay? -
Maybe that's why you're desperate. I've got some good buys on eBay. Hey if I think it goes too high, I don't buy it.

Ebay themselves. I used to sell stuff on there and they kept the money. Them and "PayPal". (now there's a misnomer). When I complained to them about not getting my $$'s transferred to my bank, ebay just said "tough".
There are some crooks on the vendor side as well and like I said, I'm not that desperate that I have to do business with crooks.
I've had this car for almost 30 years and it can sit until I find the spring and handle I need and it won't be on ebay. -

Ebay - I do a small bit of selling, and 'my share' of buying...
- My opinion of Ebay as a seller: They charge too much for their services.
- My opinion of Ebay as a buyer:
- They do not 'support' the buyer as well as they could/should.
- They tend to 'look the other way' if the seller violates their rules.
(They will enforce them, if complaints are submitted)
- They do not do even a 'fair' job of preventing fraud/fraudulent sales.
PayPal - I have an account. For convienence, I maintain & use that account, although I do not like them too much either (i.e., they are a means to an end...).
Your comments, concerning loss of $$: As far as I know, Ebay doesn't do collections on purchases, nor does it accumulate anyone's $$ for sales - It does act as a 'conduit' for online transactions via PayPal, to make payment of purchases easier. The only $$ Ebay directly collects are those related to their charges for posting & sales.
Any loss of $$ through PayPal should be resolved with them. If they mis-sent or lost your money, I believe you should continue to attempt to be reimbursed, even if it means going through the courts to do so.
Although PayPal is now 'owned' by Ebay, they are considered separate entities. Any transactions, dealings or disputes with PayPal should go directly to & through them. - 'Complaints' can be filed with Ebay against PayPal, but I seriously doubt that they will be acted upon.
Doesn't do much good to keep that 'chip on your shoulder', and isn't punishing anyone but yourself - Granted the car has been in your possession for quite some time, but you are denying yourself the pleasure of seeing it completed & enjoying it - and more importantly, it's mere presence in it's current state may be a source of aggravation and frustration to you, each time you see or think about it.
There are 'other' venues for getting your parts - This forum, the 'chat' room, the WTN Newsletter, the HET Club and the local Chapter(s), are just some of them...
Good luck on your search, and with any future contact with Ebay & PaPal. -
Yes, both being "owned" by ebay says something in itself too.
I am strictly "cash and carry" now and I find I have a lot more money to spend. I quit giving, when I can avoid it, a portion of what I spend to those that covet other peoples money.
Can you say usury?
BTW, I have decided to install "Bear Claw" latches and fabricate what I need to use the handles I have. Having "suicide" doors necessitates their being installed. -
Super6 wrote:Can you say usury?
Yep, I can & yes they do... My guess is when Webster's updates their dictonary, it will say "usury = See Ebay, PayPal...".
That having been said -
The majority of sales on Ebay are legitimate, by individuals. Their fees are levied against the seller, not the buyer - Although the buyer does see them, in either the minimum bid, or in "Shipping, handling, insurance, etc..." (in spite of Ebay's rules regarding exorbitant shipping/handling charges).
PayPal also levies charges against the seller, and in some circumstances, the buyer as well. However payment of purchases by PayPal is optional, unless the seller mandates that you use that "service". If that is the case, and you object - don't buy the item, or tell the seller that you prefer not to use PayPal (before bidding).
I guess the point here is not to let yourself get 'hung up' on this, as Ebay & PayPal could care less anyway... Use them, don't let them "Use You".
Good to hear that you are moving ahead with the work & this is not slowing you down. Although the "Bear Claw" is not OEM, I am sure it will be safer, considering the suicide doors.
Again - Good Luck. -
i am sorry you have had bad experiences with ebay. over a four year period, buying and selling i have no complaints...but i understand you can only go by what your experiences were. the springs you need are currently for sale on ebay so i believe you would be able to find them at swap meets or perhaps the national in reno. sam's number at northwestern auto supply is 616 241 5611...or 800 704 1078 they also have a web site. just type northwestern auto supply in the seach engine. best of luck tom

It's a relatively small job for any competent machinist to make up the door handle threaded collar. I had some done in brass a while ago - should outlast this mortal soul. Regarding ebay, you seem to cutting off your nose to spite your face. I've had many dealings, and apart from my misreading the details and buying the wrong stuff, have had no problems with receiving goods, or in payment. Don't judge the whole barrel by one bad apple.
Geoff.If you're stuck in a hole, stop digging. -
I've bought and sold on EBay for the last 6 years with no serious problems. I'm pretty careful who I buy from and only buy the stuff with money I can afford to lose. (just in case) I've probably sold 15 cars or so and all but one were pleasant experiences. In that one, the buyer just didn't read the description well.
Although the BearClaw latches are great, if you don't want to do a lot of cutting and welding, try the WTN especially. There are a lot of the older Hudson products still around and maybe somebody has reproduced those springs or knows somebody who can do so. Don't give up. Welcome to the forum and the brotherhood of Hudsondom. -
I've had this Essex since 1978 and it's done a good job of transporting me around. I'm on the third engine.
I put bear claw latches on now and eliminated the problem latches altogether. They even open with a remote.
The outside handles remain but don't open anything. The inside door panels will have to be redone to cover up the unsightly holes left by the inside handles and the notches for the new latches.
As for eBay. Some still didn't get it. I have nothing against most of the people that buy or sell on it. My problem was with the thieving "Pay Pal" tribe and eBay for not trying to help straighten the mess out. They didn't xfer several hundred dollars to my bank for some sales to Australia.
The customers paid for their merchandise and I shipped it. I had copies of their receipts of payment as proof to eBay and PayPal to no avail. Come time to transfer my funds to my bank, it was no longer there and they said they had no record of any of it.
Now if that's biting my nose off to spite my face then so be it. I do not give thieves a second chance at stealing from me. -
Very interesting solution to your door latches. Sounds like a very 'neat' installation. I would be interested in seeing some photos of the work, as well as the 'finished' product.
As far as Ebay/Paypal - From your description, it appears that you were 'scammed', although I doubt if it was by PayPal. Just a guess at this point, but -
- You probably received some type of 'email notice', supposidly from PayPal, stating that funds had been received for your account...
- You then sent the merchandise.
- When you logged-in to PayPal to transfer the funds to your bank, the $$ wasn't there.
My guess is that PayPal doesn't even have a record of those 'buyers' ever having an account...
This type of thing is another 'side' to "scamming". The offending Ebay "member" who won the auction probably never sent the funds, they just send an email to you - 'supposidly' from PayPal - stating that funds had been received. Their hope was that you would send the merchandise - before you checked your account. Your 'resolution' may be with Ebay, but more likely will need to be directly with whoever got/received your merchandise - in Australia (their local law enforcement).
There are HET Members & Chapters in Australia - some of them are active in this forum - Maybe they could assist in determining where & who got your merchandise, and possibly point local law enforcement in their direction. If not, go to the HET Club Page, find the listing of the international chapters, and attempt to make contact from there.
http://www.hudsonclub.org/chapters/Inter.html
Since the 'funds' were probably never actually transferred, this is theft - which is prosecuted & punished, no matter WHERE you go in this world.
Any 'sellers' on Ebay who accept PayPal as payment should take note - Make sure the funds are actually in your account, before sending the merchandise. This isn't the responsibility of either Ebay or PayPal, and I seriously doubt if they will 'go to bat' for anyone in this situation, other than possibly the suspension of what is probably a 'phantom' or 'false' Ebay account anyway... -
I do not use Pay Pal. They are dishonest to say the least. PayPal transfered money out of my bank account AND my credit card without my permission and without notification. I wasn't scammed THEY were. Some buyer in France scammed them. I only got my $900+ back after contacting law enforcement. Try reaching someone there that gives a hoot! When I emailed them, All I ever got was prerecorded messages. The only person I managed to talk to on a phone was a moron.
Never again will I give my bank information or credit card number to them. They say its for "Verification purposes" Baloney! If a seller won't take my money order, I don't do business. I get a kick out of those people that say" I only keep a small balance in my Pay Pal account, so I can't loose much" HA! All they have to do is transfer money out of your Bank or credit card account. They did it to me. I love Ebay, but without the PayPal."..
Ain't this a fun hobby? Dave w. Fl -
This seems to have diverted to a debate about purchasing methods! As has been mentioned, scammers will rip the system off if they can. I have had "Official" requests form ebay, with their logo etc. warning me that my account will be closed and I would be unable to trade unless I "verified" my details, including my Credit Card number, together with the PIN and a click-on return address. HA! You never give these details to anyone. Notify ebay themselves if this happens and they will immediately nullify the scamsters web address.

Geoff.
Agreed - And my apologies for diverting the subject.
While I am not a 'fan' of either Ebay or PayPal - as indicated in my earlier postings - they seem to take the brunt of a lot of criticism from those who are unwary victims of cons, scams and outright theft.
I've been the victim in a couple of these myself, luckily they were minor and totalled less than $100 (Both Ebay sellers - one is in jail, and the other is still selling on Ebay...).
It takes more than 'an ounce' of caution when making web transactions, and those that are not knowledgeable & current on the 'scams' can be "taken", literally!
In quite a few cases, it is the person being 'scammed' who provided the information to the 'con artist' in the first place - by responding to bogus emails which warn of various types of account problems, which always seem to require ALL of their personal information...
Words of advise:
- Treat any requests for information/confirmation on any account you may have that are received via email as 'bogus', fake or a 'con';
- Do not respond to the emails (i.e., do not reply);
- Do not access or open any of the links contained in the suspect emails.
Then -
- Connect directly to the online account, through their website, and verify that your account is current/correct. If necessary, do so by telephone.
- "Forward" suspicious emails (full headers, etc...) directly to the holder of your account.
For Ebay, it is "Spoof@ebay.com" (without the quotes)
for PayPal it is "Spoof@PayPal.com" (without the quotes)
No "friends won here", but -
Just because someone (you) gets 'ripped off' by a buyer, seller, or a 'scam artist' does not automatically make the service provider the 'bad guy' or make them RESPONSIBLE for getting your money or goods back.
NUFF said - I'll get of my "Soap Box", and will try to avoid future postings of this type. -
Sorry for not replying. I've been ill and away in hospital. Slowly getting back.
I'd be interested in the handles and latches as the bear claws took space required for allowing the windows to wind down. I want to go back to original latch if possible until I can devise a way to make bear claws work again.
You can email me direct with your requirements.
Thanks.
