rearend for 46

    i hate searching for info as it takes tooo much reading so i will just ask: i need a rearend that will fit my 46 & 47 commodore that will use the same wheels thats on the car alread. ford 9" comes to mind but im not sure. and what years of whatever others have used. spring is coming and i need to get started on this. . .

    FYI

    Ford 9" and 8.8 have same 4.5 bolt Pattern and many different widths to fit most Hudson's. I think Bronco11 and real early Econoline Vans are the narrowest rears. Some say Granda fits too. Ford rears have un-equal left/right Tubes but never has been a problem. Older Mopars have thevsame bolt pattern too. Best measure your housing then walk the Wrecking Yard.

    problem here is we only have late model junk yards and if memory serves only two of thosem and ya better know what your looking for or they have no clue.

    all the old stuff gets crushed about the same time they get it as old stuff here is so badly rusted there is nothing to save.

    but i will measure my spacing and go hunting in backyards of the low income areas i guess. . . . .

    I hate when Yards clean up all older stuff. Iwould like to help but I have a pickup thats wider measurement than a Car. I have used varius widths Ford 9" housings in a '37, & '50 Hudson in addition to my Truck. Only spring pads need moved. The U Joint Flange is the same and Emergency brake cables can be adapted. I read a Post that '70's Granada practically bolts in Pre-Stepdown'. Click on my Name then select All Posts and read more on Rear End Interchanging in older Threads. It easy swap...

    Any of the 80'S square LTD and Crown Vic have a 8.8 that will fit . But your tape Is always your best friend . Note If you plan to use a wider wheel you will have to adjust accordingly do to the off set. Hudson Dave:)

    im putting a mopar 8 3/4 in my essex some day... with a 5 on 4.5 bolt pattern and probably 11x2.5" drums. it looks the best from the back and on my car you will see it without bending over ot look. they are strong enough for over 500 hp and there are plenty out there. if you decide to change the gears you can just buy a used chunk, dont have to set up gears. let me know the width you need and i can find out the closest size, in what model it came.

    Measured the rear axle on my 47 Brougham yesterday and got a width of 60.5 inches between brake drum/rim mounting faces. I also an looking for a Ford rear axle (preferably 9") and will post when/if I find one that will fit. I realize the width doesn't have to be exact as an offset rim can be used to compensate for axle width differences.

    68-70 b body, sattelite and coronet would be your closest fit at 60 1/8", the next would be the 70-74 e body cuda and challenger, at 61 5/8", and the 65-69 c body, the big cars which will be 61 3/4. these should all be pretty easy to find, they were almost standard in all of these models and will all have a 5x4.5 bolt pattern. just stay away from the imperial they had a 5x5 or 5.5 bolt pattern. if you find the one your looking for double check the dimensions because some could have swapped it out in all these years.
